Is it me or are these boards much slower than the old ones? They're now even slower than the Wizards website!!

I could do without the polls, but give me back my speedy access!

We have to wa9it until traffic slows down some...with everyone regesitering all at once, it can get busy. Also we have to wait until people stop trying out all the new gizmos ;) I am sure that isn't helping...

Yes.

In all fairness to the GODs of EN WORLD, I have been told (From a Very Good Source) that the boards are slower because of the amount of people registering. I do find this true based on the Member list.

I am sure once the dust settles, all things will be fine. :D

(I can't seem to uncross my fingers)

On top of that, there may be a certain time dependance to the load. The past couple of days, the boards have gotten really slow around lunchtime and early afternoon EST, while the morning is fine. Lots of folks using their lunchtimes to check the new boards.

Avatars don't help much either for those with a dial up. With 4k avatars and a 3k transfer rate, I could see where things get messy.... thank god for cable...

Okay, that answers my unspoken question. It's not just me having difficulties in the afternoons. It's slow being on a T-1 line after about Noon EST, and then gets a little better around 2:30 - 3pm. It's as if I/O on the sever is going through the roof.

Depending on how the servers are setup those with dial up connections can slow down/tie up the server itself. Basically what happens is that one of the connections can be 'tied down' to a slow connection as it serves up the data.

Then again, I have no idea of how things are truly setup at enWorld....

Fortunately you can shut the avatars (and images) off in your profile.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. The last few weekdays it's been taking me 5-10 minutes just to open a thread (with a T1 at work), and traffic on the story board seems way down from its usual. It seems like it's gotten harder to post, as well.

I suppose it'll work out... either everyone will get registered and thing will get back to normal, or people will get frustrated and drop off... and the speed will go back up!

Ah, the price of success!

Well, from what I can tell, enworld is running Windows/IIS. These new boards run under PHP. Unfortunately, PHP's performance under windows is far from what it is under linux or bsd and other similar operating systems.

In my experience, the PHP ISAPI implementation is buggy and the CGI implementation is obviously slow. My guess is that the slowness of the boards comes from the setup of the server. vBulletin is high quality message board software so I'm sure they've done optimizations for speed.

Disclaimer: This is all conjecture, it may or may not be true. YaY!
