Are you a "loose" DM?

Not me, the group is lucky to aquire anything magical from finding it. Sometimes they get lucky though or recieve something as a gift.

Too easy? Heck no. I felt guilty when I gave a 3rd level party of seven a wand of silence with six charges and a potion of cure moderate wounds. I worried a lot that it was too generous.

Funny thing though. They haven't used either item.
 

I've been more liberal in giving out treasure than I originally intended to be, but I'm still not nearly as giving as the 3rd edition standards, so I'd say I'm not guilty.
 

I haven't been guilty of this for quite a few years, but I'm kicking around the idea of doing so now. After worrying so much about balance, I'm ready to just give the players the keys to the candy store, then unleash the hordes on them. It should be a nice change of pace.

BTW - I'm considering using the old Giants and Descent into the Depths modules for this purpose, given how much tougher they are in 3E. Has anyone run these with the new rules? I'm curious how it went.

That's interesting, I've found that to be the case as well. My PCs are sixth level I've given out a wand or two and a handful of potions. I know that the wand(s) have never been used and I don't think any of the potions have been either. I guess they're just reluctant to use up their one-shot items.
 

My usual mode is "tight", per the group's stated preference.
However... on those occasions where we're playing one-shots outside of any campaign, the cry has been heard:
"Who wants to play MONTY HAUL'S RAILROAD?!?!?!"
Usually greeted with enthusiasm, and the don't let-your-beer-consumption-disrupt-the-game rule is temporarily suspended, mayhem ensues.

We found this with DM intervention whatsoever. (Course, our DM will swear he went easy on us with the encounter itself...)

Hmmm, I must not be one of everybody then.... Dunno how that works.


But, we didn't kill the roper anyway. We fed him a bigass lizard. Worked out quite well.

don't forget to scale it correctly. 8-12th lvl in 1edADnD was retirement time...aka...what d20 D&D considers Epic level.


so as long as you remember to get the PCs to the right level first. things should run okay.
 

Why no, No I'm not.

As it was, for several levels, my players despaired of ever finding a magic weapon for the first four levels or so, and some not until they reached 6th or 7th level.

If you mean the group I'm in (I seem to remember that you also run another group), nope, I think your just about as tough as you need to be. I'm having a great time. And I think Li's up to the challenge of Castenameir's (sp? I know i didn't spell it right) Island.

As for myself, I think I may be too loose when I DM, but my player's don't seem to mind, and I'm still having fun, so I'm not making a huge effort to change.
