1. Tarantella
2. Deodanth
3. Phraint
4. Thoul
5. Red Slime

1. Yes. Used one in a game. Fun monster
2. Nope
3. Nope
4. Yes. Used several times in games
5. Don't think so. I've seen slimes which are red, but they might not be the one you're thinking of (is it the one which turns into a gem?)

Thoul - cross between Ghoul and Troll? Regenerates? Could have sworn it was from somewhere in BECMI... but then again, I could be just imagining things...

Yes, hobgoblin, troll and ghoul crossbreed. Originally from a Basic set so I think it ended up in Rules Compendium. I seem torecall the tarantella was some sort of spider, maybe with suction cups, from either a Basic or Expert set. The other three are unknown to me.

Are you familiar with any of the following monsters in D&D (any edition)?
I think that only two of these are D&D creatures: the tarantella spider and the thoul which both first appeared in the 1981 Basic Set.

I can't find any evidence of a deodanth, phraint or red slime in any D&D product. (And I have looked, cue a shameless plug for my complete D&D monster index.) D&D has black, blue, gray, green, olive and violet slimes, but not -- so far at least -- red slime.

Phraint - but only because of some nigh on legendary story of a friend's ex husband insisting that he play one in a MERPS campaign just to be a jerk.

Phraint is an insectoid race from the Arduin game system. They are basically insect creatures that have no emotions.

Arduin was a very early system that was essentially heavily house ruled D&D. Eventually it evolved away from D&D into its own system.

Here is a miniature of a phraint.

Deodanth are also from Arduin. They are hairless and sort of a cross between a demon, a cat person with a demonic sort of personality (generally).

Here is a miniatures of a deodanth.

You took the words right out of my mouth (except said them more cleverly and included links :))

Cheers
