Are you familiar with these obscure monsters?

I remember the two from the Moldvay Basic Set (tarantella and thoul), and had never encounter the Arduin two until this thread. I don't remember a red slime in and D&D I have read, but do remember one from The Fantasy Trip. The were a monster from In The Labrynth (that system's DMG), and also appeared in Death Test II. TFT had one type of slime that was immune to fire and blows, but you could tear it apart with your hands, but I don't remember if that was the brown or the red. Now I'll have to pull out my In The Labrynth when I get home. (I'm at work now.) Curse you, Jester.

Also, that's cheating, going outside of D&D.
It depends on what you consider D&D. The earliest version of Arduin certain reads as a D&D supplement (one of those early "D&D but not D&D books"). It is about one short step away from Judge's Guild as a D&D product.

In fact, for obscure monsters I am sure you would have an easy time finding them in the Judges Guild D&D products. I remember the "Vorpal Bunny" from an issue of the Dungeoneer.

As others have said, Thoul and Tarantella are from Basic D&D. Phraint and Deodanth from Arduin.

Red Slime? I know I've seen that is console-based RPG video games, but never in a PnP RPG.

1. Tarantella - yes. It's a spider of some sort. Not sure if it appeared in the 2e Mystara MC, and I'm at the office so I can't check.
2. Deodanth - no
3. Phraint - no
4. Thoul - yes. The good ol' troll/hobgoblin/ghoul mix. Pretty sure it's in the 2e Mystara MC.
5. Red Slime - no (well, not outside of the Dragon Quest video games, anyways)

I think the Deodanth is from jack vance, IIRC. probably Cugel.

otherwise, I remember 1 and 4, and that's it.

Damn, with all the 10488 monsters I have in my Access database, and you still manage to foil me on this one ... Congrats !

For the record, the red slime is from some supplement referenced in the Arduin books called "All the World's Monsters", but I can't recall which volume. (I never had access to AtWM, any volume, so the red slime is the one of these that I am actually unfamiliar with myself.)

1 and 4 for certain.
4 got some changes and play time in Dungeon magazine too. and esp at the end they really hyped it up. although it was nothing like what it started as...

2 i'm pretty sure i saw before. but my memory is failing as to where. i wanna say it started in a book and then got converted in white dwarf. much like the thomas convenant monsters... ur-viles and such...

3 i can't say i recall at all. probably never saw it. jog my memory with a description or year.

5 not directly. i seem to think i remember a crimson slime.

Phraint is an insectoid race from the Arduin game system. They are basically insect creatures that have no emotions.

Arduin was a very early system that was essentially heavily house ruled D&D. Eventually it evolved away from D&D into its own system.

Here is a miniature of a phraint.

Deodanth are also from Arduin. They are hairless and sort of a cross between a demon, a cat person with a demonic sort of personality (generally).

Here is a miniatures of a deodanth.

ya da sheep glyfair. thanks.

edit: this is it. i'm certain.
