Are you worried about character conversion from 3.E-4.E?

Are you concerned about character conversion from 3. - 4.E?

Other: Absolutely not. I won't be converting. They can have my 3.5E PHB when they pry it out of my cold, dead hands!

With all the piles of money they're raking in, I'm sure the Edition Support Gestapo will be around to your house sometime during next year's holiday season to do just that!

The only thing I would have to convert are stats from existing sourcebooks such as Eberron, FR, etc., and if I'm going to go through all the work to convert them, I might as well come up with new stats altogether. So while it's a bit upsetting to think that all of my Eberron and FR sourcebooks won't be usable with 4e in terms of straight-out-of-the-book stat blocks and other game mechanics, I'd be doing the same work either way. So no, the inability to convert characters (or anything else for that matter) to 4e doesn't concern me.

If anything, if gives me an excuse to end my upcoming campaign before 4e is released. :)

I would like some degree of mechanical backward compatibility, though it looks like there will about as much as there was between 2e and 3e (i.e., none). No need for fits of anger, though -- I can just keep playing D&D 3.5 :)

I wont try to convert characters. I still have my 3.5 books (and the 3.0 too), and existing characters will use the old edition.
When all my current campaigns end, then, if 4.0 seems good enough, we will start playing it, with new characters. So, conversion is not a problem.

I guess this is why there should not be detailled statblock in campaign setting : a level 12 elf fighter is a level 12 elf fighter. If you need to use this character, you should either prepare it according to your current rules set, or use the DMG/MM to pick a standard level 12 elf fighter.

Not really, a character is based on a concept, not on his stats. Most concepts can be modeled with the core classes pretty well.

Though I worry a bit about the artificer in our campaign!

Cheers, LT.

Voted Other.
I think we won't convert to 4th, we went from 1st to 2nd to 2.5 to 3.0 to 3.5, 26 years of evolution (?), less time to play now, child coming and so on.
Converting to 4th for playing once or twice a month isn't worth the money.

If it can't convert one of my player's Spellthief, another of my player's Hexblade, and another has a Samurai/Psychic Warrior/Elocator, etc. then what's the point?

I don't think players are gonna want to ditch their Dread Necromancers and Factotums just so they can start over playing...the core classes again.

Oh yeah, there's now two hobby shops in my region boycotting 4E. This will be fun to watch, WotC.
