Argh! My living streak has ended!

Riveneye

First Post
After playing in a game for almost a year now, my character finally died for the first time. She was the only character that hadn't died yet, and I was quite proud of that. I (stupidly) went off in search of the Grandfather Tree with only 1 other person (half my level. The rest of the party was busy with training, making items etc). We went into the forest and night fell. I took watch, and then I was suddenly being squeezed by this tentacle that seemed to also do acid damage. I couldn't free myself, so all I could do was fire at it. I was down to 7 hp (out of 101) when my final arrow killed it. I felt such relief when I didn't die, but I opened my mouth too soon. I melted some more for 14 damage. The person who was with me couldn't see in the dark at all, so he couldn't see what potions to take out of my pack to feed to me (and he had none of his own), so I died there and then. He tried to carry my whole body back to town, but a large ape jumped out at him. He dropped my body, and hid while the ape ripped me in half and ate a large amount of my body. Once the ape left, my partner came out of hiding, and cut off a few of my fingers to take back to town. As he came to a river, he saw a demon. He was only on 4 hp at the time, and thought he would die then too, but the demon just looked in his direction and disappeared in a blaze of flames (odd...). As he got back to town, the dwarf in our party, who is not trusted by my partner approached him. He suspected him of killing me, since I didn't return with him. Since he didn't trust the dwarf, he wouldn't say what really happened, which just made the dwarf even more suspicious. The dwarf ending up knocking my partner out and they both got dragged to the local guard house. After an hour or two of interrogation, they were both set free, and I was finally resurrected 2 few days later (game time, or should I say, a few hours later, real time).

Ahhh, such a sad day. However, there is a lighter side to this. I have now lost the level of Tainted Spellcaster that I was tricked into taking a few weeks ago. Now I can reach my goal of reaching Ranger 5 / Sorcerer 2 / Arcane Archer 10 / Deepwood Sniper 2 all before reaching 20th level ;)

Not to destroy your day even more, when you lose a level you need to level up in that level again (since you have only temporarily lost that level to death).

When you die your temporary level loss require you to gain a level to get back to your normal level again, so you're "stuck" with the levels of choice you have already attained.

hides from the wrath of Riveneye when he finds this out

I don't believe that's true, Liquide. Rules reference, please?

Erghh now you have me to go home and get me books :) , currently at my fathers house eating but give an hour or so and I can check it up (now you have me worried that I'm completely off-base LOL).

likewise. I have not encountered a ruling that when you get raised/ressurrected that you have to earn said experience to regain that level.

Unless it is a house rule.

In my game I don't lower their level but I lower their exp. taking their level -1 *1000. it's the same as loosing a level but not loosing the knowledge that they already know. It makes it harder for them to gain a level.

What Liquide is referring to is a house rule. I'm sure the core rulebooks don't provide that ruling.

Kyramus, I use a similar rule, except that I don't lower the XP. The raised PC develops an XP "debt" equal to (level-1)x1000 XP. XP acquired after raising first goes towards paying off the debt, and only after it is paid off does it apply to the character as normal. PCs with an existing XP debt cannot be raised, and the various raise/resurrection spells also cause permanent Con loss (1d6 for Raise Dead, 1d4 for Resurrection, 1 for True Resurrection). Being brought back from the dead is a serious business IMC.

And Riveneye, I sympathize!

To get the topic back on track ;) I want to tell you about a similar story that has a lesson for both of us: don´t you EVER go adventuring without the whole party! :)

I once had a rouge3wizard4 called Scorn Deep. It was a guy that I really liked to play. I´m the guy that is always on time for our sessions, so while waiting for the rest of the gang to show up I asked the dm if I could check out a part of the dungeon the we left unchecked last session
He said "ok" and I grabbed our halfling npc bard and we started to explore a corridor and a room - and boom- suddenly we were up against 2 ghouls. They won initiative and we were both hit. And we both failed our saves...
After that I´ve refused to play solo :D
