Ia Ia Cthulu phtagn!

How I missed this one is beyond me. Can't wait to hear if anyone's had a go with it yet. Maybe everyone who's played it to date failed their snity checks ;)

I've played the original; I'm not sure how different this version is.

In the original game you play an investigator moving around Arkham, fighting (or running from) Mythos creatures, passing through gates to Other Worlds and trying to close said gates.

It's very much like Talisman in that your investigator has stats, items and spells that affect how you do in these (usually fruitless) endeavors. It's a lot of fun, but very hard to win.

My group tried it about two weeks ago and had a blast. None of had ever played the original, and none of us had read the rules prior to sitting down. We had a few rules problems as we learned as we went, but we are looking forward to a second playing.

Also, the board, pieces, and cards look to be really well done......lots of Cthuhlu goodness (?) for all!

Ah, Arkham Horror!
I have both the original and the reprint.

They're both good, but the reprint? Is really, really a quality product. (Of course I expect no less from Fantasy Flight.) It's well worht the price:$50 is a reasonable price, given the complexity of the game and the quality/quantity of the pieces they provide.

A really, really quick overview...

Firstly, there's lots and lots of pieces (it's really a "Kitchen Sink" type of game.): there's oodles of Cthulhu-esque monster tokens, a couple of different decks of cards (Gate, Mythos, and Location Decks, along with smaller piles for Unique Items, Common Items, Skills, Allies, Spells, etc.) Additionally, there's 16 Unique Investigator Cards, along with corresponding playing pieces. Theres about a half-dozen Great Old Ones to choose from as the villain of the piece.

The Gameplay? Takes a little bit of getting using to (there's some fiddly bits, especially in the Monster Movement part, and the COmbat phase.), but it flows really nicely after a few games.

This is a cooperative game, in which the Investigators win by closing all the Gates open on the board, permanently sealing six Gates with Elder Signs, or by beating the Great Old One when it awakens.

I played this with my group about two weeks ago. I'm not much of a board game person, but it seemed like a decent game if you like hopeless games with little chance of success ;). The quality of the game (pieces, board, cardds, etc.) is top notch.

We actually managed to get very lucky when we played and wound up winning. We drew a Great Old One that wasn't quite as nasty as most of the others and managed to beat it (htough it was really close). After the game, we looked through the other cards and realized how lucky we were. Like I said, this is a game where it seems success is pretty rare.

Sounds like an improvement over the already enjoyable original. I can't wait to play it.

Quality-wise, absolutely!
There were some rules-tweaks, but not as many as I thought there would be.

The art is excellent, though much of it is recycled from the Cthulhu CCG.

LMK if you decide to try it, and what you think if you do.

Well, i just bought it online. As long as i've been looking forward to it i couldn't bear not to. Seems like a great way to spend a few hours with friends on a friday night, without the pressure of actully having to run and adventure.

Played this for the first time a few weeks ago. Absolutely a blast to play. We had lots of fun, and managed to win (through a rules misunderstanding... didn't know you can't pass clue tokens to each other).
