Armor penetration again

I'm working to a low magic campaign with some firearms (renaissance tech) and some good crossbows, so I decided to try the armor penetration rules I read about on this messageboard. (but still I don't want to use all the Grim'n'Gritty rules with armor giving DR and similar things)

My idea was: heavy crossbow (that does 2d6 and not 1d10 in my world( and the renaissance gun have armor penetration 1;
Siege crossbow (2d8, reload 2 rounds) and Musket have a penetration of 2.
The penetration also reduces the hardness of materials.

Balistas, cannons and similar weapons are resolved as touch attacks against creatures of size Huge or less (but attack bonuses should be very low, as these weapons are not designed to kill small targets)

Any suggestions, expecially from those who already had used similar rules, are welcome
