Arrows...

How do you track arrow usage?

  • Once they're shot, they're gone forever. Buy some more!

  • Characters can recover some arrows, but some break or are lost. (house rules?)

  • Characters can freely recover all their arrows after the fight.

  • I don't care, don't keep track of arrow usage, or none of the above. (comments?)

You fire em, you lose em.

Actually, we do this just so that nobody has to remember how many arrows were fired. My players are pretty good at keeping track of stuff like this, and I keep them honest by checking that they are actually writing stuff like arrow counts down.

Same here.

We usualy assume that if an arrow is shot, it's lost. However, if one of the players asks me, "Are any of my arrows intact?" or something, I'll generally give them back about a third of the arrows that they fired.

I would like to add, that if a character pushes for it, I'll let them recover some of the arrows.

Also, specially made or masterwork arrows might have a better chance of being recovered.

Magical arrows are always non-magical after use, even if found again intact.

I voted for one an arrow is shot it's lost.

all lost, though i might make exceptions for magic arrows.

I don't want to spend time rolling dice to see if an arrow survives... i mean they only cost 1gp for 10-20, and the dice rolling inturpts combat imo

I usually try to keep some track of it, but not real closely. Never know when the encumbrance rules will allow a DM to spring a twist on an unsuspecting party. :)

As a DM, I voted #2, per the rules (see Crothian's post). It actually hasn't proven difficult for me at all. After all, I only have to track half the arrows. The other half are fired by the players, and their arrows aren't my problem.

Yup.

We have a house rule that says half of the arrows used (rounded down) can be retrieved given enough time (~10 minutes). It's a simple, no arguments, no hassle rule.

I follow the rules: those that hit are considered destroyed, while those that miss have a 50% chance per missile of being reusable if recovered.
