Arrows...

How do you track arrow usage?

  • Once they're shot, they're gone forever. Buy some more!

  • Characters can recover some arrows, but some break or are lost. (house rules?)

  • Characters can freely recover all their arrows after the fight.

  • I don't care, don't keep track of arrow usage, or none of the above. (comments?)

I follow the rules: those that hit are considered destroyed, while those that miss have a 50% chance per missile of being reusable if recovered.

Snap! They are the offical rules anyway. Although don't particularly track arrow or food useage if there is an easy supply to hand, say a town adventure.

i'm amazed at this... do you people who track arrows track encumberance closely as well?

?? Amazed at what? Of course we track both arrows and encumbrance - right down to the last pound. It doesn't slow anything down at all because when new equipment is added or lost, it has become automatic to record/adjust the weight. For our group it's just common sense.

As for arrow breakage: as per Crothian (which is also as per the PHB). That's not a house rule.

Arrows that hit are lost, those that miss have a 50% chance of being recovered intact.

We also house rule that the arrowheads of those that hit can be recovered -- particularly important if it's masterwork...

Magic arrows in my campaign are almost always attached to magic quivers that grant the "returning" feature to the arrows, along with a "use activated" mending spell to repair them. I price that item as a scabbard of keen edges + 2000 gp.

Generally we don't bother with regular arrows. Even inexpensive bags of holding/quivers/haversacks can hold a bazillion arrows. It's not worth tracking down to the last arrow, provided the character has taken adequate steps to be sure they have a supply consistent with how fast they go through them.

Magical arrows (i.e. of slaying or whatever) are of course tracked. We don't use many +x arrows, since GMW makes that moot.

Every arrow that hits, the player ticks off his Charsheet. (Arrow hit = arrow lost)

Of every TWO arrows that miss, the player ticks one off. (Arrow miss = 50% arrow lost)

The ranger IMC carries two quivers (20 arrows each). He can carry (in a backpack, in his rolled sleeping bag or whatever) as many "arrow bundles" as he wants.

Arrow bundle = a sack of cloth tied with a string on the top, holding one quiverful of arrows. After your quiver is empty, you pull out the empty bundle and slip in a full bundle. If you have the bundle available, it's a move-equivalent action to refill a quiver. If you have to dig through your stuff, it's a full-round action at best. If it's on your horse at the dungeon entrance, you're in trouble. :)

Got the arrow bundle idea from LotR movie.

What do the rules say about the time it takes to recover arrows. If you are outside, it could take a long time, especially in woods or grasslands.
