Ars Magica 5e, Rhine Tribunal, 1220

Yair: From my understanding, a simple die is cast in circumstances of safety with no problems. While you aren't overly stressed, I would say simply being in an infernal aura distorts magic enough that you would need to roll a stress die.

Leo:

Indeed, the signs on the doors appear to be those of the sigils of magi of the Order of Hermes. Chances would be high that their sancta would be there. You recognise a few from your earlier studies.

The song is in German, which I believe you can't speak. For those who do speak the language, it is in a very old dialect, and is singing a love song, but sadly.

Your unseen arm rattles the cabinets a little, but they seem fairly heavy. Your spell to open the lock succeeds easily (rolled a 9). As soon as the lock snaps, however, a beam of fire shoots unerringly at you!

(Creo Ignem) Pilum of Fire, Penetration of 10, damage of 17.

Leo meows in pain and surprise, a sound strangely similar to a suffering cat's. The conflagration, which would have incapacitated a normal man, leaves him with a medium wound - his coat smoldering around a nasty burn. He bellows in frustration "Who in Hades entraps a cabinet?! Paranoid fools!"

OOC: With Magic Resistance 5, the spell passes through, and with Soak 8 it is left with damage 9, enough for a Medium Wound for Leo. He's now at -3 for everything. If anyone can heal him - now would be a good time. If anyone wants to poke fun at him for rushing in carelessly - well, he won't take kindly to it, but you may have a point :D

Does the trap appear spent?

Is there anything I remember about this covenant's magi? I have a Rhine Gorge Lore 1 [8 xp] with specialty in Hermetic history; again, invisible castle seems to be down, so you'll have to roll for me...

Gorgamesh 2 + 8 = 10.

Your spell shows this place to have an infernal aura of 2.

Leo: The door is now open at least. Inside you see a number of books.

This you already know -

1031 AA (892 AD): The First Tribunal
sponsors a proposal for a new
covenant, Rudiaria, affiliated to
House Flambeau, which is duly
founded. The tribunal asserts Rudiaria’s
ownership of all magical sites
along the river Rhine between the
towns of Mainz and Cologne.

1101 AA (962 AD): The Tribunal has
heard charges of diabolism brought
against Eginolf of House Flambeau of
Rudiaria covenant, which remain
unproven. Reports of malefic activity
in the vicinity of Rudiaria are, however,
noted with disapproval, and that
covenant is therefore ordered to investigate
and report within seven years.
The magi of Rudiaria are also urged to
redouble their efforts to avoid disturbing
the mundanes of the region.

1108 AA (969 AD): House Mercere
reports that Rudiaria covenant has
been destroyed — burnt down in an
apparent catastrophic magical accident,
with all of its magi slain or
missing. Diabolic involvement is suspected,
though the exact cause is not
revealed. It is noted that this event
coincided with a crippling famine in
the region, which has contributed to
mundane unrest. Declarations of
regret are heard for the believed loss
of these magi.

A roll of 4 gives another piece of information: apparently, several wizards wars were brought against the entire covenant by Hoplites at the time.

Thomas: No healing that can't be accomplished elsewhere. Leo took a nasty wound but he's still alright.

Spellcasting - if you have a look at your sheet, you'll see its a level 5 spell and you have + 17 to cast.

That means you roll 1d10 and add 17 normally, and try to beat the level; five. If you fail by 5 points or less, you still succeed.

If you roll a 1, roll again, multiplying the result by 2.

If you roll a 10 (or 0) its a botch, and inform me.

Currently you are in an infernal aura so it imposes a -2 to your roll.

1d10 + 15 vs. a difficulty of 5. Very easy. Now describe what happens when you cast a spell.

OOC: I'll trust you guys to roll whatever needs to be rolled until invisible castle is back online.

Ilshana stares around the room, her unnaturally green eyes glittering in the gloomy light. She opens her mouth to say something, but jumps, startled, when Leo triggers the old trap. After her squeak of surprise, Ilshana covers her mouth to suppress a giggle.

"I'm sorry," she says, "It's just...the noise you made...oh...oh my..." The fit of laughter passes mercifully quickly and she returns to her perusal of the chamber.

"Goodness though, it is dark down here isn't it? I wonder if that's the magi's doing, or if there's other forces at work. What did those papers say, Leo?"

(OOC - Using my Second Sight (from strong fae blood) as I look around, trying to see if there's anything hidden from view in here.)

I sense infernal aura
Gorgamesh say
But I guess Leo is already understood the inferno part.
He grins to the lion.
Beware my friend, you don't want to burnt out and have my look.

Leo snarls quietly at his companions chiding, and makes another short incantation in Latin. A book magically rises towards him.

OOC: Leo casts Unseen Arm again; he has a +14 Casting Total, 4 on the dice, -3 from wounds and -3 from aura; a total of 12 for a level 5 spell, so he casts it without fatigue loss. Unless any more unpleasant surprises occur, Leo takes out the books (and anything else there) and sees what they're all about.
