Ars Magica 5e, Rhine Tribunal, 1220

Tomas, you follow Illshana halfway out of the covenant before she calms down. She is running in fear for a full few minutes, and is exhausted by the time you reach her.

Leo and Gorgamesh, what are your plans?

Leo curses a few curses that are unfit for this board as he sees Ilshana flee. He starts towards her, but checks himself, figuring that being "attacked" by a lion might not be what Ilshana needs right now, and that the fear - obviously supernatural - isn't going to fade until the magic does anyway.

Looking disdainly at thehaunchback throwing books at the infernal portal, he mumbles to himself "and then there was one".... Leo steels himself, and tries to cast Unseen Arm to open the door; perhaps, just possibly, the trap won't set off from afar. As he does so, he does his best to cast a ward against Mentem magic, although he knows it us probably a futile gesture.

"Stand back" he orders Guerino as he starts to incant his magic. "I'm going to open this accursed door".

"Of course you are" mumbles Guerino sarcasticly, as he stays clear from Leo's path - well to the side, so that the lion could flee up the stairs without knocking him over, should fear overcome him. "Of course you are." Leo ignores him.

OOC: Sorry for the delay, real-life issues.

Leo first casts a spontaneous spell to guard his mind against fear; a ReMe effect. His casting total is +15 [Re 11+ Me 4 + 3 Sta - 3 wounds], so with a dice of 1d10=2 and aura -3 it comes up to 14; divided by two I get spell level 7. At Diameter duration (Personal range and Individual target), it comes out to a base effect of level 4 plus one magnitude for the duration so spell level 5, plus a little more oomph to bring it to level 7. So I don't think it will do much, but Leo tries.

Now a bit tired (0 penalty), Leo tries to cast Unseen Arm. His casting total is normally +14, but with the wound (-3) he is at +11; the roll comes out 1d10=5, -3 for the aura, for a total of 13 - which is enough to cast the spell. Leo tries to turn the door's knob and open the door with his unseen arm.

Leo: Make a Bravery check of 9 or higher.

1d10=6+1 = 7; Leo fails.

I sense a very frightened lion is about to be running up a flight of stairs very soon...

Edit: on second thought - can I invest a Confidence point to boost this roll? If so, Leo does, and braves the enchantment.

Leo: Despite the strong magic that washes over you, you resist it. The door itself cracks open..

Inside, you see a display room; art and crafts decorate the walls, and the candles light when the door opens. A sparrow begins its song from a perch on the corner, its body a metallic sheen, and its body covered in runes.

A display cabinet stands before you with what appears to be an older style of sword, and a side door with a wizards sigil bars the way further. The sword is in pristine condition.

It appears whatever else was here, and the dust indicates that this is so, that the other things are gone, though perhaps not too long ago.

Turning his head to the direction from where he heard the sparrow, Gorgamesh’s attention shifts from the portal.
Stay here.
He says to the hunter, indicating his desire that someone will stay to scan the abyss. Gorgamesh makes his way to where his fellow magi are

Illshana: After a few minutes, you find your way almost back to the Baron before calming down. You know for certain that the door is something you don't want to go near again.

Thomas: You and Illshana are together towards the top of the stairs.

Leo and Gorgamesh: You two are looking in the room. Gorgamesh, you don't see anything I haven't already described.

Leo looks at his haunchback companion. "Well, if I were enchanting that fear-trap, I'll put a good Sun duration on it - or Moon. I don't think we can wait for Ilshana - we'll have to find her later. Once more, into the breach!"

Leo steps into the display room, and tries to guess from the dust what once was laid on the displays. He shows little interest in the automata and the sword - he just wants to know the repertoire of the crafter.

Guerino is close behind, casting weary looks at the mechanical sparrow.

OOC: Just thought of something - if it was Mentem magic, Leo should have been immune to it in his Animal form.... I take it Leo invested that confidence point, there?

Also, everyone else - this looks like a Verditius' lab entrance, so expect lots of contraptions...
