ooc: Don't know much about the system. Can Thomas cast anything useful for the situation?

Well, looking over your list of spells you can try casting Pass the Unyielding Portal. The spell is described on page 137 of the rulebook (do you have it?). Assuming the door is wooden, it allows you to temporarily turn it into play-dough, so you shape a hole in it or whatever. You'd need to touch the door to do so, however. If the door is trapped....

To cast it, roll a dice, add the number listed on your sheet (+23), add the aura modifier set by the SG (-3 in this case). If the total reaches or exceeds the spell's level (5), you cast it (easily).

Another, perhaps safer, option is to cast Piercing Shaft of Wood, which turns a piece of wood into a barbed shaft and sends it flying to the target. If you take large wooden planks (a staff-size), damage is +10 per casting; a few such launched "missiles" might suffice to break the door down.

OOC: My apologies again, there has been family matters to attend to. Not one thing but another. I shall endeavor to push everyone appropriately.

Leo: You fumblingly paw at the door for a moment; the moment you touch the wood, A tense moment passes, and your brief, wizardly life flashes before your eyes...

And the door does not open; it rattles against a bar on the other side.

Walking Dad: For your character, your specialisations are change (Muto) Plants/trees (Herbam). This gives quite a bit of flexibility; if you want to cast a spell, use a bit of imagination and we'll help you come up with the number to beat.

Others: What are Gorgamesh and Illshana doing?

ooc:Can I try to cast Pass the Unyielding Portal at range? Or making a spontaneous casting that does the same at range? (The die I must roll is a d% right?

Easily done.

Voice range (You will need to say something loud enough that the door can 'hear' you, though with quiet magic x2 you don't actually need to incant any Latin or anything. Interestingly, this does mean you could cast spells while talking to someone and they wouldn't notice you doing anything weird.) Pass the Unyielding Portal is Level 10.

Your Muto Herbam is +23. Roll d10, add the bonus, divide by 2, and then -2 for the aura. ((D10+23)/2) - 2. Target is 10.

Now, when casting your magic, add your wizards 'sigil' in to make it awesome - Like how when Leo casts magic there are lion roars or the like, except yours would be different, something that describes you.

OOC:

Dad: Very cool!

All: In the Character thread I have posted some general stuff you have, or at least may have if you choose to take it.

As the wood opens, and past the rather mundane bar that lies unaffected on the other side, you see the remains of a lab similar to many of the others, though in somewhat of a better state.

The first thing you notice is a body, long since rotted to a skeleton. It is dressed in fine robes, or at least the remains of them, and wears rings on all of its fingers, as well as an amulet and a circlet around its brow. It lies in the center of a circle inscribed on the ground, but even in the state it is in you recognize claw marks all through its robes, and broken bones underneath.

The lab itself seems more like a smithy that had exploded and landed in an apothecary. Many fine tools have rusted away, as has the bedding and other pieces of furniture.

No evidence of the curse you are seeking is here, and it appears you have explored all of the rooms. There is still the odd one armed girl in a circle in the other room, and the exit that does appear to lead to a Regio more tainted by Evil.

What you do from here is up to you. This place may have some viability as a covenant if you want to stay here, but I believe there are 3 others to find yet.

Protection circles versus demons?
Gorgamesh enquires
They shielded themselves from the denizens that lie beyond the portal?
Looking at the wounds he add
But some went through...

Free of the compulsion, Ilshana joyfully bleats, "I did it!" and runs down the stairs to join the others, just as the door is 'opened'...magi-style. She applauds enthusiastically, and enters the room behind Thomas and Gorgamesh.

"I think you're right," she says to Gorgamesh. "He was trying to protect himself, but the monsters got through and killed him. Hm. Or monster."

She paces around the circle thoughtfully.

"The demons seem like they probably can't leave that room," Ilshana muses. "And the baby can't escape the circle. So...what did -this- do you think?" She leans over to inspect the skeleton's jewelry beadily. "And where is it now..."

"Right then!" Ilshana stands up and faces the others. "Here's what we're looking at. The mages opened up some kind of infernal zone...maybe one that was here all along...and summoned out of it some kind of creature that they trapped in a magic circle. Little did they KNOW that the creature was a baby until its MOTHER came roaring out of the void, all claws and flame, and slew them to the last!"

She nudges the bones with her boot toe. "The last being this poor sod."

"But! It STILL couldn't free its baby from the circle! So then the duke's brother comes in here and encounters it and it says, 'free my baby and I'll go, or give you riches or whatever...but if you don't, I'll take all of YOUR children until mine is freed! And the duke's brother, being a normal sort of man, panicks and flees and never comes back. And the demon is enraged and now it works its curse on the castle and everyone inside!"

Ilshana finally, FINALLY, is obliged to take a breath.

"So it all comes down to that demonic baby, and what we do with it."

Leo paces around the circle too, trying to see if it's whole. If it is broken, or inactive, he'll reach inside and cast image of the beast; 1d10=8+9-2=15, easily made.

"An interesting story" Leo nods at Ilshana. "Assuming it's true... how about we throw the child back into the hell through which it came, through the portal. Would that end this predicament, do you think?"

"If you think this action wise... I'm a bit over my head in this situation. Can we really trust... it... to just leave?" Thomas asks reluctant.
