IDK, the issue I had with the animal lords from 1e & 2e is that by essentially making them human is like saying, actually humans are the lords of animals. I know the new ones have animal forms (I think that was a thing before too IIRC), but I wish some of the art showed them in their beast form. That is what an animal lord should be IMO (aka Princess Mononoke)

I find the way the Cat Lord (one of the animal lords) has evolved in art/appearance over time to be fascinating. The 1st edition Monster Manual II had a unique take on the Cat Lord, while the new Monster Manual definitely is more "anthropomorphic cat".

I like both, to be honest, although the 2025 Cat Lord is definitely "cuter".

But do any of them answer to "pspspspsps"?

I've used animal lords in a game before (my own, not the dnd versions) and had them appear as perfect examples of their kind with some crazy runic patterns on their fur. I think the images I used for inspiration were from magic the gathering.

I like the humanoid version much better myself (isn't it from Lhankmar?). The idea of the Lord of Cats taking human form to deal with those pesky humans - like a Dragon "stooping" to transform into a human.

To me the new picture is just a Tabaxi and a Lupin - way too anthropomorphized (and I really like animalfolk).

Have to admit, it's been a while since I watched it. Still rather have my "human" animal lords (though maybe the ability to turn into a huge animal wouldn't be bad)

Animal lords are from Elric. I believe the Cat Lord was named Meerclaw.

If this isn't stretching the definition too far, and maybe not my favorite, since some of the classics have already been covered, however, the toy figurine of the "Neo-otyugh" has always stuck with me!
