I voted hybrid. I can see them being flexible depending on which rituals/infusions they learn, between leader/striker/controller.

But let me be the first so suggest their REAL role will be producing outrage in Eberron fans.

Oh how right you are sir! I think your predictions are pretty much spot-on. I can think of few classes as locked in to the design of 3.5E as Artificer, so it's certainly going to be fascinating to see them done so soon in 4E.

Your fascinating is my horrifying ;)

Well, there were three ways to go with the 3.5 artificers

1. "Pure artificer". Make magic items and be a party-buffer. This is, I think, what artificers were supposed to do.

2. "Melee artificer". Usually warforged and based off of the racial substitution levels, a fairly effective self-buffing combat guy.

3. "Blastificer". Use wand feats and class features to make what's arguably the best blaster in the game. This is most of the basis for the 'artificer is broken' complaints, and the least like how I think the class was meant to be played.

I really think the first one is more of what the 4e artificer should be about, and that says arcane leader to me. Also, the swordmage should cover the second, and wizard and sorcerer should cover the third.
