As Wolfwere is to Werewolf ...

Whizbang Dustyboots

Gnometown Hero
And jackalwere is to, er, werejackal ...

Does the category of "animals that change into humans" have a name like "humans that change into animals" are, more or less, called lycanthropes in D&D?

If so, is there a template for something like this, too?

The Tome of Horrors calls them "Therianthropes", and has a template, as well as the following types:

Jackalwere
Wolfwere
Asswere
Foxwere
Lionwere
Owlwere

Don't forget the pirevam, the holdber, the flayminder, the lingob (not to be confused with the nibog), the biezom, and the xvart.

Hmmm, did they ever get their PDF version of that made, or are those of us without TOH1 still pretty much condemned to haunt used bookstores, hoping against hope?

And does the template address anything other than animal to human, or does it support, say, animal to other humanoids?

Tome of Horrors notwithstanding, the 2e Van Richten's Guide to Werebeasts (oh, Ravenloft, wherefore art thou, Ravenloft?) had more correct thoughts on these matters:

'Lycanthrope' is a word more specific to men that turn into wolves (Lycos = wolf)

'Therianthrope' would be a more correct way of referring to werebeasts in general (Therion = animal)

'Anthropotherion' would be the reverse of Therianthrope, i.e. beasts that turned into men (wolfwere, jackalwere, etc.).

I would have used anthropothere, but I agree about the ordering on the morphemes. Tome of Horrors is smoking crack.

Sounds like a geeky, D&D insult, e.g. "Your gnome rogue is such an asswere!"

I think I'll use that insult in my next game... I'm such a geek. :)
