D&D 5E ASKING ASSISTANCE

Seth Lowe

First Post
Hey, so I'm totally new to D&D. I was going to get into in high school but ended up not and now I'm getting into it. I've bought only the 5e starter set so far so if anyone has tips, advice, etc it would be greatly appreciated.

You could save 15% or more with Geico?

What I am trying to say is we would love to help you but it's kind of hard to know what to focus on. Do you want DM tips, Character building tips, setting information, help with finding a group to play with etc?

Welcome!

Could do with more information from you.

Do you have anyone to play with?

Are you looking to play or be the Dungeon Master of a group of players?

Whichever way round, the starter set is a very good intro into the game.

Hmm, good point I was quite vague. Umm I kinda need tips/advice on all of it. And I have a cousin that plays but he works and I work so it's kinda hard to find time. He would be willing to teach me stuff but it's kinda hard when that's probably only once in a blue moon.

The starter set is all you need to actually get started, aside from people to play with. Ideally you'll have another 3 or 4 people to join you. Not sure where you live, but a good place to start is your local card shop (pretty much any local business that sells Magic: The Gathering or similar games) and look for people browsing the RPG books there. Depending on your location, a site called meetup.com is usually pretty good for finding local hobby groups. Just search your area for D&D or Dungeons and Dragons or Roleplaying Games and see what comes up.

Once you have a few people to play with, and after you've run a few sessions with the start set, most of the players will probably want to purchase their own set of dice and a copy of the Player's Handbook. The person who is the Dungeon Master will probably want to purchase the Monster Manual, but he/she can skip the Dungeon Master's Guide for now (it's really not a great resource for learning how to DM, instead focusing on alternative rules and advanced concepts).

If money is tight and not everyone can get a Player's Handbook, the core rules are available for free on the official website. The main things lacking in the free rules are extra races, classes, subclasses, and feats. If your players are using the Starter Set characters, then it's not a big deal at first.

Once you find a group of people to play with (3-5 is optimal) but other numbers higher or lower are doable, work out who is going to be the Dungeon Master (DM) and who are going to be the rest (Player Characters (PC's)). Then come back to us as either the DM or a PC and ask for a few more details. This forum is great for help and advice and will guide you through the process. Most here are very familiar with the starter set.

Do have fun!

D&D is Great!

Ah okay, thanks a bunch. I have a local comic shop but they don't do D&D very often. They do more MTG and YuGiOh tourneys. And like I said I do want to learn how to DM but I will definitely try to find someone who would be more cool with it. I live in a superbly rural area where everything is about sports and beer and hating people that are different so it's really hard to find others that enjoy this type of thing.

The local shop doesn't need to do D&D; it's just a place where people that might possibly be interested can be found. I wouldn't be surprised if there's a community board up with other people looking for a game.
