i've only read the first three books, so no spoilers, please.

how many named characters are in "a song of ice and fire" so far (after five books)?

i don't need to know the exact number. in fact, an answer like "about 400" or "over a thousand" is sufficient.

I haven't seen any complete lists. Not even George himself knows:
George RR Martin interview – Books – Culture – New Zealand Listener

I do know that Roy Dotrice, who does the audio books, made it into the Guinness World Records for the number of distinctive voices he does. They credit him with something like 242. And Roy, when he told me about this, was laughing, saying they didn’t count nearly all of them … he thinks there are twice that many

Named? Jeez... Two hundred odd seems low, but a lot of those are just names, with little expansion or even dialogue.

Also complicated by avoiding "The One Steve Limit"

those 2 links don't even list all the Frey's. Walder Frey gets his own mention, but that geezer's got like 80 descendants, half of which get mentioned in the books

None of the Unsullied are mentioned, nor the various mercenaries or Meereeneese.

I'd say the lists aren't quite complete.

I just finished the latest book. Now I must wait an eternity for GRRM to get off his arse and finish the series.

224 characters have speaking parts (even if it's just one line) in A Game of Thrones, the first book in the series. I would imagine the actual number of mentioned characters would be quite a bit larger (Stannis has no speaking role in book 1, but is mentioned... and Aerys Targaryen is also mentioned, but has no speaking roles - because he's dead, etc ,etc.).

Roy Dotrice set a Guinness record for most voices in an audiobook for his work on A Game of Thrones. I believe he broke that record with his recording of A Dance with Dragons, though.
