Gotta be first level. I have difficulty relating to a character I didn't play from the ground up. I also wouldn't have wanted to read The Two Towers without reading Fellowship first.

I picked level 1-4, but In my case it meant "Level 4".

jk ;);)

I like level 1-4 as well, with either 1 *or* 4 being the starting level :)

However, I am cool with level 10. I think that's a fun level to start at!

I voted 1-4, but I don't like starting at 1st level. 1st level characters die very quickly and don't have any of their class-defining abilities that make each race/class/concept combination unique.

Been in four games in the last three years that kept the faith. Starting at first level and all that.

I'm over it.

The game that lasted the longest? I was the last man standing. I won. Finally hit 9th level. Then the game died. I was the last of the original players. The DM and I stuck it out over several groupings. And you know what? After two years I am entirely sick of that char. But that game is dead anyhoo.

Folks here talk about mid-level games, and fantasize about hitting upper mid-levels. Never have been there myself. My high school game that I played in for years never broke 8th.

I am, quite seriously, sick of this "low-levels" rules stuff.

I wonder why anyone even plays dedicated casters.

I tend to start campaigns on third level - here, PCs are no longer as fragile as complete beginners, but have a lot to strive for. Granted, there is something to be said for brutal low level meat-grinding fun... it worked very well in my first 3e campaign.

I prefer to start at first level. Heck, I'd start at level 0 if given the chance. I dislike combat around and past level 10. It's too difficult, too powerful, too unforgiving for small mistakes or an unbalanced party. At least as written. I can modify it how I wish when I'm running the game, but in other DMs' games or Living Greyhawk, it's just boring.

Also, starting at first level, I get to develop the character's personality organically, as he develops in skill.

For the record, my highest-level character is a wizard 6/divine oracle of Boccob 3. I like the character, but not the adventures he tends to face.
