D&D 5E At what level do your heavy armored characters get their plate mail?

whether its a paladin, fighter, cleric.... if your going for the heavy armor....you want plate. The ultimate in protection!

But....at 1500 gp its one of the priciest core items in the game! So at what level do you generally find the heavy armor characters are getting their plate in your games? Could be they find it, find a magic version of it, or just get the gold and buy it, any method.

I tend to give more magic out at lower levels, but not necessarily gold. Somewhere around 4th level if the players decide to share some gold with the fighter. I leave it up to them how they divide treasure.

Generally speaking, it usually happens around level 5. It can happen sooner if the party decides to pool their funds.

In our current game (just hit 5th level), the fighter just crafted a suit of plate armor.

They should have it by level 5 but not always.

In my current game, everyone started at level 3 and could choose from a curated list of magic items in addition to starting gear and 300 gp. There was an option for magical (but not +1) plate armor, though no one took it. As of last session (still level 4), they looted plate armor off a duergar chieftain.

When they can afford it, but it won't be given as treasure

Whenever they make the decision to put their money to it (if ever).

As soon as they can afford to have a suit made for them or have a looted suit customized to fit them (assuming it’s not got the magical resizing thing).
