Atlantis

OK, its an old song by Donovan about Atlantis in which he mentions twelve gods. He goes on to name 5 - the poet, the physician, the farmer, the scientist, the magician - who are the other seven? Do they even have names or was this poetic license on D's part?

I only want to know cause I was working up a new homebrew game and this song came on and reminded me of an old marvel comic involving the celestials and these twelve humans - which gave me ideas for a campaign world pantheon, etc. etc.

If anyone knows I'd appreciate the info.

Abraxas,

Here are the 'pertinent' lyrics...doesn't look to me like the others are mentioned.

The continent of Atlantis was an island
Which lay before the great flood
In the area we now call the Atlantic Ocean.
So great an area of land,
That from her western shores
Those beautiful sailors journeyed
To the South and the North Americas with ease,
In their ships with painted sails.
To them East Africa was a neighbour,
Across a short strait of sea miles.
The great Egyptian age is

But a remnant of The Atlantian culture.
The antediluvian kings colonised the world
All the Gods who play in the mythological dramas
In all legends from all lands were from far Atlantis.

Knowing her fate,
Atlantis sent out ships to all corners of the Earth.
On board were the Twelve:

The poet, the physician, The farmer, the scientist,
The magician and the other so-called Gods of our legends.

Though Gods they were -
And as the elders of our time choose to remain blind
Let us rejoice
And let us sing
And dance and ring in the new Hail Atlantis!

HTH,

According to "Atlantis, the Antediluvian World" by Ignatius Donnelly [1882] the 12 kings of Atlantis survived the cataclysm and went on to become the main gods of the Greek pantheon :Zeus,Hera, Poseidon, Demeter, Apollo, Artemis, Hephæstos, Pallas Athena, Ares, Aphrodite, Hermes, and Hestia.

see http://www.sacred-texts.com/atl/ataw/ataw402.htm

Maybe you can map that across to the titles Donovan used. I dont know where he got them from - perhaps one of the other many, many, books on Atlantis.

I did find this list on an Amber site ( http://www.angelasmackay.com/wheel/setting/geography/goldcirc/atlantis.html) I was browsing a while ago. Where they got them from I have no idea !!! And watch out - whatever plugin they are using tended to crash my browser ! :(

Farmer
Sailor
Seer
Poet
Scientist
Physician
Wizard
Historian
Architect
Teacher
Artist
Judge

Hope this helps... :)

Thanks LiVeWiRe and Hawklord.

I had looked up the lyrics after hearing the song and found the same info on the Greek gods. However, for this homebrew I didn't want to use the Greek pantheon - Titles like those used in the Donovan song were what I was looking for and the Amber info will do nicely.

Thanks again :)
