Attack of opportunity

hello everyone ... i was asking myself if there was a way to increase the number of OA per round ... i took the daily stance Cobra-Spitting Stance (ranger - martial power) and was wondering if i could make it even more useful

If you're looking for something along the lines of 3.x's Combat Reflexes feat, that's essentially built into the system now.

PHB said:
One per Combatant’s Turn: You can take only one opportunity action during another combatant’s turn, but you can take any number during a round.

Any more than that and Spitting-Cobra Stance would be sort of pointless, wouldn't it? After all, if you could pop an enemy for every square it moved toward you, why would it even try?

thx for the explanation ... i was limiting myself to only one opportunity attack per round .. so if 5 ennemy was moving towards me i was making only one opportunity attack against one ennemy ... so you telling me .. that .. if 5 ennemy moving towards me (in close burst 5) ... i can make a single OA vs. each of them ?

Yep. That's why you don't move towards an Archer using the Spitting Cobra's Stance. =)

Additionally, remember that Spitting Cobra gives you an Opportunity Action, not an Opportunity Attack. This is important for two reasons.

1) You can't make Opportunity Attacks with a ranged weapon. Opportunity Actions are not limited to only melee attacks though, which is why the stance works.

2) Things that specifically provide bonuses to an Opportunity Attack (such as the Fighter's Combat Superiority ability) wouldn't work with the Spitting Cobra Stance since it's an Opportunity Action.

Yep.

The real question is would a reasonable DM allow attacks granted by Spitting-Cobra Stance to function with Combat Superiority for a fighter multiclassed into ranger...

Edit: It's like you saw into the future, Doc.

Immediate Actions once per round.
Opportunity Actions once per each other character's turn.
Neither can be done on your turn.

Spitting Cobra Stance is very nice indeed.

Would shifting trigger an attack from Spitting Cobra Stance?

How about forced movement will this trigger an attack from Spitting Cobra Stance?

As far as I'm aware, shifting isn't moving, and neither is forced movement.

Oh, and if your DM wants to be a meanie, the best way to avoid having nastiness from Spitting Cobra Stance is for the monsters to all prepare actions, and then charge on the same turn. That way you only get to shoot one of them. Personally I think that's a rather low trick for a DM to pull, but I'd certainly do it as a player, so I guess it's swings and roundabouts :p

Shifting and forced movement are both movement (hey its even in the name of the latter !), but they're exempt from opportunity attacks. Spitting Cobra Stance gives opportunity actions, though...

Forced Movement specifically states that it does not provoke opportunity attacks or other opportunity actions (PHB pg 285), but I think shifting is fair game for Spitting Cobra Stance.
