When moving from a sq. Adjacent to an Enemy to a Sq. Also Adjacent to the same enemy does this provoke Op Attacks?
The player Handbook Uses the Saying, "When leaving a sq. adjacent to an enemy" but contradicts this in their illustration of the troll with reach.

I believe this should provoke an attack of opportunity. This is in essence a flanking maneuver, which the Shift ability would be of use for.

So in my campaign, this is indeed provoking an opportunity for attack. I agree that the book however isn't exactly clear on this fact.

Doesn't the creature in that illustration have "threatening reach" rather than just reach? Threatening reach permits an attack on creatures withinthe reach range, whereas simple reach require the creature to be adjacent in order to get an opportunity attack.

In a word, threatening reach sucks.

Threatening reach sucks for the player, not the monster.

An opportunity attack is incurred when leaving a threatened square - whether or not that square is adjacent to the creature/player making the OA. Most creatures/players only threaten adjacent squares, so any creature/player leaving that square by any method other than a shift would provoke an OA.

Creatures with Threatening Reach threaten out to their Reach distance, so a creature with Threatening Reach and Reach 2 threatens every square that would be covered by Close Burst 2 (or 25 squares).

Threatening Reach *ROCKS* if you're the one with it.
