I was wondering about using a skill based weapon system. Has any one else thought of this. HAve opposed weapon skill rolls. With fighters getting more "weapon skill" points and wizards getting very few. Just a thought perhaps couls manifest?

I was thinking something similar to the way shadowrun was set up for melee combat.
2 orks face off with katanas in the sprawl. They both attck and roll weapon skills. the one with higher hits. Just wondering.

Thanks

I've thought about this very thing many, many times. But I'm basically a lazy procrastinator and don't want to bother with having to convert every monster the PC's encounter to this system. But I love the concept!

Lets Hammer it then!

Lets just start then!

Weapon SKills
Unarmed
Small swords
Clubs
Spears
Thrown
Simple ranged
Hammers
Small Axe
one handed Swords
Shields
Two handed swords
Polearms
Bows
Monk Weapons
Exotic-
Dodge

A character may buy ranks in any weapon group in their class description. They may buy quarter ranks in any group not on their class list.

Weapon skill points go as follows.
(8+int mod)x4-Fighter
(6+int mod)x4-Ranger, Paladin, Barbarian
(4+int mod)x4-Monk, Cleric, Druid, Bard, Rogue
(2+int mod)x4-Sorcerer, Wizard
Alternativly drop the "+int mod"

Each Skill has the same max ranks as normal skills. 3+level. Skills have two ratings, attack and defense. The sum of these skills may not be higher than your max ranks.
1st level fighter. Att/Def 2/2 0/4 4/0
These skills may not be changed at higher levels.

Dodge is a class skill for- fighter, barbarian, monk, rogue, ranger. SPECIAL, characters may take dodge at half ranks if not on their class skill list. Dodge costs double points as it has only one rating, defense.
Bows, Simple Ranged and Thrown weapons-This has only one rating, attacking, as such each rank costs double.

To attack: roll d20 and add your attack rating. If this is a ranged attack add dex mod., if a melee attack add str mod.
When attacked: Roll d20 add your defense rating, add str. Yes you may block attacks with a sword, axe ect.
For every 5 points your roll exceeds the defenders roll, add 1d4 to the damage.

Shields: Shields add their AC bonus to your defense/dodge skill.

Obviously not complete but could work with some help.

Fod for thought

New Skill: Spell Directing-This skill is used by spellcasters to direct their magic, it has one side, attack.

Feats that need to change.
Dodge- grants a plus one to dodge rolls.
Weapon focus/greater focus-Ads one to all rolls with weapon. att/def.
Combat expertise-Trade Att ranks for Def ranks until you decide otherwise.

Newfeat
Reckless Strikes- Trade def ranks for att ranks until next turn.

Armor: Armor functions as DR only. Max dex now limits the amount of bonus you can get from high ability modifiers.
EXAMPLE: In full plate a warrior may add only +1 to attack/def rolls from high str. This also limit the amount of dex to dodge.

Dodge does not cost double points to have, it is a cross class skill for all classes except rogues and monks. Cross class still does not require double.

I am going to ove this to a new thread dedicate to this sysem.

I assume der_kluge was referring to the "HARP Lite" free download on that page:

"HARP Lite is a distilled version of the award winning game, HARP. It covers all the basics you need to play including character creation, combat, spells, adventuring, and much, much more. All packed into a 96-page, 4.7M PDF."

Likewise, the link I provided above is for "GURPS Lite", a 32-page, 1.6 MB PDF containing a distillation of the basic GURPS rules. I'll leave it up to you to decide which on you like better. I don't have any experience with HARP, but from what I've heard both systems are failry similar.

By the way, much as I dislike D&D's combat system, I would *NOT* recommend trying to shoehorn a skill-based attack system into it. That way lies madness (and a binder full of house rules.) Why not just try playing one of these other systems instead? Chances are you'll learn something, and perhaps you'll find a system you like much better than D&D...
