I've just finished reading The Long War by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter, sequel to The Long Earth. I've really enjoyed both these novels - they're very much in the mold of classic SF writing, the authors coming up with a big concept, fleshing it out, and then creating a set of characters through whom the readers can explore that concept.
