Auto-Damage and Marking

If my fighter has Rain of Steel active, can each opponent who is damaged by the aura be marked? I don't know what the definition of "attack" is as pertains to Combat Challenge.

Attack is literally an attack roll. If you aren't rolling an attack roll, then you aren't making an attack for purposes of marking.

For example, if you use cleave to get auto damage on a target, that target is not marked.
