Avenger thematic build

So I've been fiddling around with the Avenger class lately and reminiscing over the days when favored soul wasn't a paragon path, and figured I'd make something with it. But I'd like some suggestions. Essentially, my group favors fun over power so our builds tend to have a more theme-y feel than a power build.

Short story: I want to make a flying avenger. I realize the avenger and favored soul are good for this, but am a little rough on the specifics. Race is fairly unimportant at this point. I'm looking for some good build suggestions or maybe some good links to sample builds. Preferably with little or no multi-classing, I'd like to make this as solidly avenger/favored soul as possible.

Any help is appreciated!

Windsoul Genasi makes a great racial choice with the racial Encounter fly power. Go retribution for Int secondary. A 16 starting Wisdom is fine with the double attack role (I also prefer a +3 proficiency weapon, but that's me). Pump Con as a third stat to help fort and surges and dump either Dex or Cha.

Multiclass Swordmage or Wizard for Arcane Familiar (and take the wings)

Level 1 Daily Wings of Light has flight and is very themeatic, and there's a tenth-level utility that also gives an encounter fly power.

Look in to winged armor (if cloth option, I don't remember) and winged boots for magic items.

I'd like to avoid Genasi if at all possible. We were burned by the last person to play one who seriously broke the game. I do like the multiclass thing, but I'm not very familiar with familiars, could you expand on that a little more?

The short story is they came in about half way through(the only friend-of-a-friend situation), had an insane power-build which his friend helped strong-arm into the game and the DM being a laid back guy didn't see the harm. Basically the guy got real obnoxious about it and how OP he was and so on and so forth, turns that lasted forever, making everyone else feel useless, ect... We pretty much broke the group up over this as being around this guy made us all want to puke. We only recently reformed with the better players and just decided to red-line Genasi. True taking it out on the Genasi is a bit of misplaced rage, but afterwards we looked up genasi builds online out of curiosity and found 9/10 times people were using genasi to break a class/game/ect.. and decided they just weren't worth the risk.

Blame a character race because a player was a d-bag?!?!?!

There are a LOT of races with far better and abuse-worthy feat/build support than Genasi.

And here's a hint, 9/10 builds PERIOD online are min/max exercises. Count the actual number of supposedly "broken" builds for the races and Genasi will be far fewer than Dwarf, Elf, Eladrin....

The only genasi I an see that is particularly breakable is the stormsoul genasi. The windsoul one isn't harmful in any obvious way.

But if genasi doesn't work, consider githyanki instead. They also get an encounter flying power (usable on others), and their stat bonuses work about as well (Int is a secondary, no one ever complains about a Con bonus, Avengers work fine with a 16 Wisdom).

I went with a Deva Avenger and Unveiled Visage PP for my flying avenger. Thematically, it works that the immortal aspect of the Deva's soul is manifesting itself. (I considered Favored Soul, but chose for the immediate satisfaction of flying on charges starting at level 11 over waiting to level 16 for the more permanent fly speed.)
