The turnoff, Spidey getting the snot, BEATEN out of him(there's more) and gets UNMASKED!!!! by villians....

Viking Bastard, I just read the entire thread at CSF...lord...people are flipping out.

Bendis, if you ever visit this forum, take this under advisement...research the characters you are using...that is all.

i HATED new avengers #1 , but this issue wasn't bad.
Stuff actually happened.
But I don't get the out of character complaint?

Spidey got beaten down and unmasked not by one bad guy, or six, but approximately 87.
EIGHTY SEVEN.
I have no problems.

And Sentry's grand entrance to the fray was amazing.

I've been waiting for someone to rip Carnage in half since his first appearance.

Alright I know about Avengers Dissambled. But could someone PLEASE tell me what happened in #1 and how the hell Spidey ending up fighting 87 villians all by himself?! What did he end up at a "Let's Kill Spiderman" con or something?

in issue 1...Electro is hired by someone to create a distraction by breaking out the 87 super-villians currently being housed in the Rikers Super-villian prison island.

in issue 2... Electro flies off with someone, while Carnage and Mr. Hyde fight Spider-Woman, Daredevil and Cage inside. Cap and Spidey arrive on the scene with some S.H.I.E.L.D. flunkies but Spidey goes ahead, and is surprised to find what is presumably the other 84 or 85 supervillians. Count Nefaria zaps hm with some rays into the swarm of bad guys, who proceed to pummel Spidey.

I had the exact same reaction.

Bendis seems to have a fetish for having Spidey run around without his mask on or revealing Spider-Man's identity to any schmoe who just walked around the corner. I don't mind it so much when its done in the Ultimate books, but having Spider-Man run around without his mask in the 616 universe in front of a bunch of villains really turned me off. I bought #1 and and was thinking of regularly buying this series, but there's no way I'm going to get it now. The de-masking thing just took me right out of the story.

I really like about 75% of what Bendis does. He has a great feel for natural sounding dialogue and a good sense of humor. Then there's that 25% of the time that he turns me off or even actively makes me angry. I really have mixed feelings about him as a writer.

because they met peter parker where?

or saw him on late night tv when he was promoting his book?

and say "i remember him, hes the photographer who had a book about spiderman photos that was on late night tv a few years ago"

ok then.

Its not like Spidey went walking down the strret with his mask off on purpose. He got his butt kicked and the baddies pulled it off. I think too many people are whinning about it. And I do think it would be interesting to see Spidey with his secret ID blown. Having said that, I like New Avengers but it hasn't wowed me yet. And The Sentry is so hardcore.
