any thoughts? i don't think i've seen any official rules for something like this and i'm wondering how well it would work. ie - would the familiar stop being a familiar once they were awakened, etc. Has anyone tackeled this yet?

The reason you haven't seen any official rules on this is because it isn't possible by the rules. Awaken affects only animals or trees, familiars are no longer animals but magical beasts.

That said, I don't think it's a good idea, granting a familiar those types of bonuses and opening it up to take class levels is a bad idea.

EDIT - OK, gotcha. I probably should have seen that before. There goes my idea for an awakened psion eyeball beholderkin. damn. Corny, yeah, but i think it would be funny to see a lvl 20 beholderking psion....imagine some poor bastards face seeing an eight-inch-wide beholder smoke his friends with some nifty metacreative power.

Druids can have awakened companions, I don't see why wizards/sorcerers should not be able to have awakened familiars. I would make it a special feat or something though.

Heres whats wrong with it. Familiars are not animals, they are magical creatures. They are already intelligent, and are much more than normal animals. Awakening them would be a huge mistake.....it would make them almost more powerful than their master......and allowing a wizard's familiar to start taking class levels......is bad.

What if the animal is awakened beforehand, and the Wiz/Sor has Improved Familiar?

Well, Improved familiar is made for only certain familars not any new thing one can think. This is really somethin the DM must decide on himself.

And an Awakened animal can take class levels... so your Awakened cat Sor-1 familiar could have a familiar of his own, who could... well, the chain could get rather long :)
