Awakening Apocalypse - Shadowrun 5E setup discussion (Recruiting)

Well whatever you guys decide to do, lets get started! I'm eager to finish up this run so we can get to the meat and potatoes of the campaign. We still need to introduce Casper to her spirit mentor, and watch the world collapse into chaos!

Based on what Heartbreak has seen by examining the drones' icons will he need to alter their targeting protocol individually or is that something he might have to do through, perhaps, the security computers? I think the best idea would be to hit them all at once so they take out their handlers. It also might be a good idea to see if there is a global kill switch for the drones. If so, it would need to be disabled.

Each drone would need to be reprogrammed individually. This is an extended short/easy test as long as you have the sufficient marks on the target.

Keep in mind, shutting the drone down would be faster (not easier) than reprogramming the autosoft. You would then be able to tinker with the drone using a direct cable connection from your deck, and not have to worry about the patrol IC hounding and eventually finding you (since you would not need to be in the host at all, due to having a direct link to the thing you're tinkering with).

Heartbreak doesn't know if the kill switch will shut down all drones at once. To find out, he'd need to spot the device (automatic success) and perform a matrix perception test to study it.

I'm a bit unclear on what the group is about to do. Heartbreak and Saint have both expressed interest in going to the security office (I presume to try and shut down the drones, right?) but are Skinny and Casper going with them? Last I heard from Casper, she was going to try to sneak up on the drone handler in the hallway next to the dressing room behind the CTI showroom. If Casper wants to go to the Pow! preparation room to tamper with the drink mixture, she will have to get past the same security team that is watching over the dressing room.

I think I may not have provided enough direction to make the group feel comfortable on this first run. I'll try to fix that here by giving you a list of a few things you guys should think about. Of course this is not in any way meant to limit your options.

1. Anything that disrupts the event will work. Sabotage the drink, or make the drones go haywire and shoot the crowd, or take the event host out before the event starts, or lock the furnace on full blast to sweat everyone out, or any one of a number of things have a good chance to work. I suggest the group picks one instead of trying to doing it all at once.

2. Heartbreak is running out of time on the CTI host network. He is now forced to make constant rolls against the patrol IC. If he's spotted, the full wrath of the host will be upon him. He may last a short time against legions of IC programs and the network administrator against him, but if it gets to that point you will no longer be able to count on Heartbreak manipulating locks or drones or cameras, or providing any hacking support at all. This would be a disaster, because he still hasn't solved the "everything is awesome" video backup problem. Trust me, trying to find and destroy or manipulate the video without accessing the host would be worst-case scenario.

3. Don't be afraid to act boldly! You're mercenaries! You're stronger and faster and sneakier and smarter than this third-rate corp can hope to resist. You're the perfect blend of talent, and bargain-basement price (otherwise Aleksander would have found a different crew!). The surest way to fail this run would be to hesitate long enough for CTI to get sure footing to push back against you.

I'm absolutely okay with out-of-character talk about the current run in this thread, at least until everyone is comfortable. As always, feel free to ask any questions (including "what are my options?") if you're unsure how to proceed.

Hehehe...I feel like we really need to pull together on this, and commit. Casper was thinking we were going to try to get the drones out of the picture, and now Saint is wanting to take Security... We have a decent strategic plan, but we don't have good tactical communication. I'm honestly fine with doing WHATEVER at this point, but we need to keep each other in the loop so we can coordinate.

Lol, I'm unclear what the group is about to do, too.

I'm not sure what Saint's idea is for hitting the security office but HB can't take out all the drones one at a time and remain under the radar of the IC. My thought is that taking the security room might give us a way to do something en masse to the drones even if it is only redirecting a security team to an ambush point so HB can reprogram the drones for later mayhem. Based on description of the halls right after Saint and HB broke in, I believe we'll need some physical infiltration skill to get there, which (as far as I know) means Casper and/or Skinny's skillset.

I agree that we need to communicate/coordinate more.

From what I gathered I thought that HB and Saint were on drone duty and that the only option to make them all go crazy was in the Security Office so that's where we were headed. At the same time or even waiting for us to handle the drones so that Skinny and Casper were going to tamper with the drink. Maybe as a backup plan? But now that I think about it we might only need to do one to succeed.

In case it's unclear; there is no way to reprogram all the drones at once. There may be a way to shut down all the drones at once though, in the security office. Heartbreak can reprogram one at a time wirelessly while connected to the host, or off the host with an actual cable connected between his deck and the drone.

I wouldn't expect heartbreak to actually spend the time and effort to hack 15 drones. I think one or two drones shooting at the reporters in the event would be good enough to cause enough chaos to ruin the event.

quick edit to the above: Heartbreak can absolutely look at the various devices and icons in the Security office from where he is. Once he's in the host, he can automatically spot things within the host that aren't running silently. He doesn't have to be physically present for this.
