AWESOME Idea from rpg.net...

That's a very cool idea, and I like that it's dragons who are prisoners in the matrix. It's a bit similar to the Fireborn RPG, where the characters are humans reincarnated from dragons who slowly regain their draconic powers. I'm not sure I like having the humanoids be the jailers though. It's not creepy enough. I'd be more inclined to make it something like Illithids, whose mental powers created the matrix, and who have the ability to possess and take over the bodies of the inhabitents of the dungeon, like the Agents in the movie.

Of course, all the dragons that adventurers see within the dungeon/matrix should actually be freed dragons projecting into the matrix. They can shapechange to look like humanoids, but they're still dragons, and know it.

"I'm not telling you that you'll be able to dodge magic missiles. I'm telling you that, when you're ready, you won't have to."

Works on so many levels. *snaps fingers*

That just doen't mesh with the matrix idea, IMO. Neo wasn't a human in real life and a machine in the matrix. Why should a dragon be a human in the DungeonAtrix? It adds all kinds of extra baggage

It almost seems like you want it to fit the matrix formula more closely that I think is necessary.

And to me, what you are calling baggage is really a good thing; it opens up all kinds of plot angle. It fits the idea of a chosen being -- these supposed humans are "something more" -- but refreshingly unlike the matrix, everyone is a "chosen one." I also like that it feels sort of artificial, because it explains why the dungeon almost feels artificial.

I guess I just disagree on the whole dragon thing. Seems like a sudden left turn to me.
Its the whole idea that you're actually better outside the matrix (you're a dragon) than within it (you're just a lowly humanoid). To each his own, I suppose. Its still a really clever idea.

By the by, the idea of illithids as the enslavers is very cool. Keeping humans for their inherent "psionic energy" which is fueled by their constant dreaming minds. Various iconic creatures (such as dragons) could be like the "programs" in the matrix. Or perhaps the gods are personifications of programs, thus each controls a portion of the program (fire, war, etc.) and they can be appealed to effect things in their followers favor. Since they are part of the DungeonAtrix, they ultimately want to keep followers in the dark about the true nature of things, lest they lose their power.

You could really take these ideas and expand and expand on them. What, for instance, is the world outside the Dungeon like? Is it stark and full of magictech? Sleak and sci-fi? Or something else.

This really begs to be written up, perhaps as one of those EN Mini Setting books.

"What, you're telling me that I can dodge magic missiles?"

Brilliant. Here's two more nifty ideas from the rpg.net thread:

"NPC" suggests using two different systems for the dungeon and the real world - respectively, D&D and GURPS. That's perfect for the concept IMO. It greatly emphasizes the difference between the Dungeon and the Real World. It could make the idea work very well if the characters are human both in the Dungeon and the RW (trapped by illithids or whatever). Now they are always human, but at the same time they are more different than if they were dragon/human in D&D!

"J Arcan" suggests that the players, while in the Dungeon, can now metagame in character! Maybe it's just me, but I find that really funny. :D

Since they are doing the Matrix in a fantasy setting, will it work like the Matrix worked and how I see the Matrix movies. "HMMMMMMMM, this stuff is not real. How can it hurt me AT ALL? Since I now know its fake, I can't be hurt." Whats the point? That was one of my big beefs with the Matrix. "Lets see, in the Matrix I'm a god, but awake I'm a slave. I'll stay in the Matrix."

@Zappo: since I am "NPC" over on rpg.net I'm really pleased that you liked my idea ;)

The "in game meta-gaming" idea also fits perfectly:
When playing in THE DUNGEON, i.e. D&D3.5, the adventure may look like a cross between The Matrix and Order of the Stick!
When playing in "reality", i.e. GURPS4e in simulationist grim-n-gritty fantasy mode, meta-gaming of any kind is strictly forbidden - it might even be a good idea to keep their actual hit point totals secret from the players!... :D
