i want a tiefling to join a level 1 party, but with the EL of tieflings that seems like its not going to wrk. Is there a lvl 0 variety of tiefling (no class level, fewer abilities, stuff like that)?

I have seen it said by various people that someone said taking away their outsider status and making them just a run of the mill humanoid would make them +0 LA.

Take that as you will though ;)

I'd say also give them a -2 to wisdom, or whatever other stat seems appropriate.

You can use the level 0 rules in the DMG those should be reasonably balanced.

EDIT: It's the Level 1 multiclass variant.

A very odd progression there.. with it one loses out on skill points. I thought the goal of those things was to make the creature wind up being the same as the base race ;) ahh well.

If one is going to require taking the level of tiefling then there shouldnt be any harm in getting the +2 int first for the skill points.

Yeah, I would have made them +2 Int, -2 Cha to begin with as well. The intelligence is inherited, +2 Dex comes from having to run away from people who think you are a freak...

Personally, I would have done it as +2 Charisma (from an underlying self-confidence and inborn silver-tongued ability to just use people), -2 Wisdom (tending to be a bit impulsive and self-interested, with a subtile disseperation from things ... nothing ever feels quite right, because there's nowhere in particular where something like you is supposed to belong.)

Just my spin on things. ^_^

Well, according to the Savage Species book, the only thing making a Tiefling +1 LA is that it doesn't have balanced stats. So, if you rebalance the stat adjustments, everything else works out. Taking away the initial +2 dex and then have them proceed as a level 1 humanoid rather than a PC class until they reach 2nd level would work, and then they can have the +2 dex bonus and they can take a class.
