D&D 5E Basic D&D Campaign

If you want something with more options than the 5e basic rules but without buying the core 5e books, I would go with the 5e SRD. Basically you get all the classes, but only the most archetypal subclass for each class. You also get a full range of monsters, magic items, and spells across all levels.

I've used them. I actually prefer using the Basic rules ideas in that you play the game with no feats and such.

The downfall is I actually like more class options, so using the Basic rules+SRD seems to be the type of game I prefer.

I do like the Battlemaster though, and some other archtypes so I don't always just run the Basic+SRD, but I like some of the options it excludes.

I have great love for the Basic or SRD rules, but I have to make some mods to it, like having more than 1 domain for cleric. I keep the overall ''life cleric'' features built in the class, but the domain of choice decides the extra spells list, the special channel divinity and the damage type of the level 8th feature. All clerics gain the +1d8/2d8 damage (radiant or necrotic) at 8th level and heavy armor.

If I use the SRD:
  • Warlock works the same as the cleric above: they all have the (renamed) features of the Fiend Warlock, but the Patron decides the extra spells list.
  • Druids deals +1d8 with spells/cantrip that deals elemental damage at 8th level. (they also have an awesome feature from a past ranger UA where they can root themselves and become large).
  • Wizard replace their archetypes features with some features from the artificer (spell store item, flash of genius, more magic items etc)
  • My sorcerers uses spell points and can pick from the whole spell list. (Still no taker yet, though)
  • My bards have medium armors and extra attack at 7th level.
  • Fighter's indomitable is an auto-success.
* I have in mind of changing the whole Barbarian rage to instead deal +1d6/8/10/12 damage when you hit with Reckless attack (at 1st level) and generate the same amount of THP. Berserker bonus attack is a free attack and cost 5 hp (as per the playtest), Intimidating presence uses STR.

We started with the 5E basic rules for Lost Mine, but by the end of the adventure we had migrated to full PHB/MM/DMG. But, in a way that was the intent - I’d got the starter set to see if I’d like 5E, and ended up getting the full rules.

Don’t see me running just a Basic rules game again, so long as I have access to the full rules.

But, I’d totally be down for some B/X action again…

My first 5E game was with the Basic rules PDF, since it was all that was out at the time.

We converted our B/X characters over. Picking classes based on the B/X equivalent. I figured out how to do a multi-class fighter/wizard for the Elf. I this was with home brew / Basic D&D content so I used the monsters in the Basic PDF and re-skinned or made up stats as needed.

I moved to the MM and DMG when available, but (now at 8th level) the characters that are surviving are still the same class/subclass setup they had from the beginning.

Oh yeah. Basic D&D was the only game I played until the 3rd Edition was released in 2000. That's...woah. That makes it 15 years straight...longer than I've played any other edition. We ran campaigns that started out at 1st level, and lasted well into the low 20th levels, traveling all over The Known World in the process.

I'm not sure I could run a BECM game exclusively nowadays, though. The d20 system is just too elegant to abandon in favor of upside-down armor classes, percentile skill checks, and THAC0. But I would dearly love to see the Mystara campaign get a 5E update. I would finally be able to play my favorite classic monsters and modules easily, with my favorite game rules system.
You are in luck.
