Basilisks Gaze

How does it work? It does not say much in the MM...

Does it get one free gaze per round, is a partial or full action,...

BTW, is it just me that would have wished for more monster background in the MM???

Anyone starting his round within range of the gaze attack (30 feet for the basilisk) must make a save or suffer the consequences. Further, the creature may choose to use it's gaze actively on its turn, forcing one target to make yet another save.

Gaze attacks are described in great detail on page 77 in the DMG.

In addition, the target of a gaze attack can (on his turn) choose to avert or close his eyes. This reduces or eliminates the need to make saves until his next turn, but also means fighting the basilisk blind.

Actually, gaze attacks are detailed in the MM, just not at the description of the monster. In the introductionary chapter many general monster abilities are described and things as turn resistance, gaze attacks and so on are treated with more details. Basically, everybody fighting the basilisk needs to make a save when it is his turn to act and they are within 30 ft. They can opt to avert the gaze, which gives them 50% not to have to make the save. They can also opt to close their eyes with all the penalties for blindness, but at least they will not be affected by the gaze. During the basilisk's turn that creature can make a gaze attack as a standard action. Forcing the victim to make a 2nd save that round.

And if you ever have real trouble finding a rule, it's a good idea to check under the description of "Heavy Crossbow" in the PHB. Never know what might show up there :)
