Can you wield a bastard sword by the rules without the weapon proficiency feat?

And related question:

Can you wield a weapon that is one size too big or one size too small for your character?

You can, but you don't get the proficiency bonus to-hit.

I don't recall any rules on this, but I'd probably use my judgment as a DM. I'm guessing the answer is "Generally, No."

As Obryn said, yes, you can wield a weapon that you don't have proficiency in, though you don't get the proficiency bonus to hit (although just a small +, it is noticeable ...)

I don't have my books handy at the moment, so maybe I am just not thinking of something obvious -- but is there even weapon sizing? The best I recall is "if you're a small sized race, you can't wield two-handed weapons, and you have to wield versatile weapons two-handed without gaining the bonus damage for wielding it in that fashion") Though, since I've only had to deal with fairly standard medium and small size PCs I may be forgetting something that hasn't applied to our group as of yet ...

I *do* happen to have my books handy, and the appropriate text is in the PHB, p. 220 under "Weapons and Size." Particularly, "Creatures can't use weapons designed for creatures larger than themselves. A human can't fit his or her hands properly around the hilt of a fire giant's dagger, let alone use it as an effective weapon."

Also, there is a paragraph which I'll paraphrase to say that Large & bigger creatures can use two-handed weapons intended for one size category smaller as one-handed weapons.

There's more info there, so it's worth giving it a look. The only question will really come in if there are ever any Tiny PCs, like pixies, to worry about, because it doesn't really talk about scaling down from Medium/Small.

Large-size weapons do exist, but only for the purposes of oversized PCs (bugbears). I don't remember where you find the information for making a weapon Large size, except for the Character Builder. Right now, it's just kind of an annoying thing where I have to avoid scrolling too far in that particular menu so that I don't hit the no-man's land of "re-print of the weapons table with the word 'Large' at the beginning of each line", included for the off-chance that my PC is of a race I'd never play.

Nice find dan'l, I 've been looking for the officialdom answer. Good answer IMO, just cut all that oversized weps right out of the game (oh the oversized wep cheese in 3E!)

the enchant item ritual allows you to resize magic armours, without a component cost. I see no problem in extending this to weapons too.

Except you only have stats for medium weapons.

The armour resize thing is nothing more than adapting it, so that it fits whatever creature is wearing it. It's just aethetics.

Shop>Preferences>Uncheck 'Show Large Weapons'

Small characters can't use two-handed weapons and when using a versatile weapon, like a longsword, it MUST be used two-handed (you don't get the versatile weapon damage bonus when doing so - PHB pg44).
