For VTT I know some folks roll with TTS. Though most fans LJ’s I know use the Java based mekamek or however it’s spelled.

yes, Megamek is pretty great at doing straight battles. I haven’t tried it for anything else. I use roll20 when I want to run story heavy BattleTech campaigns as a GM. Then I can throw surprises and story beats at my players (suddenly, there were air strikes! Or reinforcements are here, or Elementals suddenly jump out of the trees… that kind of thing).
