The indications we have gotten is that the Faction Backgrounds might give all-new Origin Feats, at least: there are apparently 34 new Feats in the book, thoughsome of the 28 Backgrounds do use PHB Feats.
I didn’t put that together, but it is somewhat accurate from what we have seen.

All 4 of the “regional” backgrounds we saw at GenCon used preexisting feats like Magic initiate, tough, and savage attacker, while both faction backgrounds gave unique feats.

Doesn’t likely hold true in the actual books, since we know Spellfire Spark is a background feat and doesn’t fit any of the Factions, but still a fun correlation.

Not much on Atumbel over the years, but the Wiki says citing the Unapproachable East vok from 3.5:

"While many outsiders failed to make the distinction, the Altumbellan people saw themselves as a prominent nation separate from their neighbor Aglarond."

So as a nation, it is botb a minor note and primarily defined by being "we are not with these weird Sorcerer-followers over there..."

Well, as one of the 10 regions that gets a Background, I guess something like "Bedine Nomad" is a major PC concept. Lots of room for adventure ture there, too.

Yeah, I am sure there will be a Beyond section that gives a little bit about the South of Faerûn, and probably Kara-Tur etc.

I'd honestly have just combined Aunoch into The North. That would have freed up one for Southern Faerun.

But anyways given Altumbel is just made up anti elf bigots who left Aglarond and who have a history of angering Aglarond over piracy, perhaps Aglarond just straight up conquered it, fed up with its none sense.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect it across the board either direction, though I wouldn't be shocked either if the PHB Feats turned out to be placeholders either: there are a lot of new Feats in play, way more than Backgrounds.

I doubt thwt would have been the result: I highly doubt that it is a coincidence that the new map coincides with the 1E/2E box set space, and the choice to focus on the Grey Box section of the map probably preceded dividing up regions for the gazateer and player options. If the Anauroch wasn't one of the regions covered, they wouldn't likely expand the area focused upon.

And the Anauroch offers a different environment and set of adventure opportunities.
