Benefit of having 2 Ring of Wizardry of the same level?

It's only somewhat too expensive. Ring of Wizardry (IV) is 100k, and that's 6 pearls of power. At that point, the extra versatility might definitely balance the two spell slots - esp. since you can do both ;-).

Comparing it with the version for spontaneous casters; which is 24k at that level, the ring is clearly better than the pearls. It doesn't require a standard action to activate (which might come at an unfortunate time), and it doubles your spell slots, which, if you're a sorcerer, means up to 6 extra spell slots, whereas the pearl-like items only prove 4 at that price.

Of course, at the level you'd be then, there are probably better items for that price anyhow.

I'd argue that the Pearls of Power are actually more versatile -- though only if you calculate across multiple encounters. Enough Pearls of Power turns spells into per-encounter abilities. :)

Well... they have different uses, I guess. With a ring of wizardry you can memorise 8 different spells for example, whereas with a pearl of power you're restricted to the 4 you memorised, but you get to choose which ones you want back (usually between encounters, since its a standard action to use).

Which would explain why my 15th level wizard, when I finally stopped playing her, had 12 Pearl 1, 8 pearl 2, 4 pearl 3, 3 pearl 4, and 1 pearl 5. For a while I was the only "real" spellcaster in the group (minus a cleric cohort... MY cleric cohort) so I got first dibs on all the magicky things. I went FAR out of my way to find those things.

Ah yes, I'd somehow forgotten that we were talking about a Sorcerer.

For a Sorcerer, I agree that the Ring is better. It's +50% more effective, and the item slot is worth losing for the ability to blow all your spells in a single encounter.

They should rename it the Ring of Sorcery. :)

The MIC has an equivalent of Pearls of Power for spontaneous casters, called Spell Scales from memory - also a lot more expensive than the Pearls, too.

With how much the ring costs I am having a hard time seeing letting them stack up to times four being too much.

If a sorcerer wants to spend 40000 gold and both ring slots in order to go from 6 spells to 24 spells that is ok with me. I might ask them why they are making such a poor choice money wise but I would let it go at that.

Even if it doubled bonus spells from a high charisma I am still having trouble seeing it as being too powerful for that cost!

By the time it can be afforded normally I think the character would be around twelth level and at that point I am not sure if I would even care about unlimited first level spells a day.

Memento Magica, I believe... and they're 1.5 times as expensive as the equivalent pearl, MIC 164
