The pearls would provide longevity in the form of doubling up your spell selection for the day, but they lack the flexibility of a ring, which provides you with double your spell slots. For every instance of "I wish I had another fireball" I can think of two "I wish I had Lightning Bolt/Dispel Magic/Summon Monster/Fly/Haste as well" moments.

The pearls provide flexibility in that you can get back what you actually use. The ring merely gives you more guesses.

However, you can leave a slot or four open, to be filled with 15 minutes of study -- and in that regard, the ring is quite useful. Though most people forget Wizards can do that.

The open slots are useful as well if you have the Alacritous Cogitation feat from Complete Mage, which allows you to use them 1/day as a full-round action to cast any spell you know. Very useful if you don't have 15 minutes to prepare anything.
