Barbarian. Fighters are more challenging to play, since all those feats require knowing the rules to know what to do with them. Barbs are simple---point, kill.

Sorcerer is also good.

I'm sort of stunned so many people have chosen the Fighter class. With so many feats it can quickly become a very notes intensive class to play. Think of all the weapons, combination of weapon attacks, feat special attacks, stacking of bonuses from allies, etc.
I think the idea they're thinking is that fighter is a good way to start, then then quickly branch out from there once the basics of attack, damage, and skill rolls are done. A decent training wheels character so to speak.

I voted fighter, barbarian and sorcerer, but I am not sure. I am in the same quandry, possibly introducing my wife to the game with my long-time RPG buddies.

This will be interesting.

Sorry, I was bad and voted before I fully read the poll description. I, like many others said fighter, but I didn't notice the 9th level clause...

At 9th level, I'd change my vote to Barbarian.

But like others have mentioned, I prefer to start newbies at level 1.

Yes, I agree. There is no way in hell I am starting my wife at 9th level. She would become overwhelmed very early. 1st level is the way to go.

Start a newbie at 9th? Sucks to be him.

Fighter
Ranger
Rogue

I think "What is the worst class?" is a better question. I almost started a poll, but you can just take this one in reverse, really.

Wizard
Bard
Monk

Fighter. They're simple to built at low levels, and the complexity increases as the character levels. Gives new players a learning curve.

It's also less likely to frustrate them with constant character death, at least until they master the combat mechanics.

Fighter or Cleric.

Reason: Can be heavily armored and have okay hp.

Fighter: A new player can get help with picking simple feats like toughness and weapon specialization, then hack away.

Cleric: One focusing on healing, since buffing is more complex. Player sits in a tin can and heals others. Maybe clubs something with a mace.

Worst choice would have to be rogue. Their massive sneak attack damage makes running into combat tempting, yet they die very easily if they aren't played right.

Barbarian!
(Bar bar bar, barbarian!)
You got me rockin' and a rollin', rockin' and a reelin' barbarian!

The Auld Grump, because I got no sleep last night, and am under the temprary delusion that joke is funny...

A spontaneous caster noob will surely regret some of his spell selections. Better be ready to hand-wave some rules.

Voted Fighter, but I could also be persuaded that Ranger is a better first-time gamer choice.
