"Best" non-core 4 character party?

(Strict Machine): Warblade, Knight, Duskblade.

(Skills to Pay the Bills): Scout, Artificer, Swordsage, Ninja, Spellthief, Beguiler.

(Heals on Wheels): Psion, Favored Soul, Shugenja, Spirit Shaman, Archivist, Healer.

(Bring the Noise): Psion, Warmage, Wu Jen, Wilder.

Approaching from the opposite angle, what would be the worst group that still had four distinct character roles? :-)

Somehow, I guess it'd have a Soulknife...

Depends. That kills most other groups too if you don't use Psionics are different.

Worst group? Hmm. We once had a fighter only group. We rocked. We had a bbn/multiclass group: No problem with nothing. We had a wizard only group: Rest intensive but fun. Bards only: DM went crazy. Pretty fast. Ever talked a vampire into suicide?

Spirit Shaman
Warlock
Beguiler
Warblade

would, I think, be a strong group: Healer, Blaster, UtilityMage/Skills, Tank. A Dragon Shaman (with breath weapon feats) - for extra healing and buffs - or a Warmage could be substituted in for a Warlock.

As for an inefficient group? How about:

Spellthief (skills)
Hexblade (warrior)
Marshall (buffer)
Dragon Shaman (healer/blaster)

Besides having characters that lack really good synergy with the Spellthief, the group would be massively Charisma-heavy and lack a front-line heavy armor tank, a good spellcaster, and an optimized healer). On the other hand, overlapping auras could potentially make the group dangerous. You could replace the Spellthief with a Scout, because the scout depends on mobility that would often rob it of the effects of the Marshall and Dragon Shaman's auras.

Four Frenzied Berserkers; aka there can only be one party.

Oops Frenzied Berserker is a PRC not class.

hmmm...

Dragon Shaman (Blaster)
Dragon Shaman (Tank)
Dragon Shaman (Buffer)
Dragon Shaman (Healer)

...or would that actually work?

Going away from best/worst, here is something I wanted to try - the phb II party:

Knight
Duskblade
Beguiler
Dragon Shaman

Only these 4 classes, the 5 npc classes, and no prestige classes.

Suddenly we have a much grittier world (healing is hard to get), and dragons are even more terrifying, because NO ONE has a good reflex save vs. their breath weapons. On the other hand, it may penalize the Beguiler, since all the pc classes have good will saves. But PCs don't have to be common, compared to NPCs.
