Best Slay-writing

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Howard's Conan stories. My favorite is definitely Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber (and the rest of the Amber books to a somewhat lesser degree).

Steven Brust is also good at "single person vs. many lessers" scenes, but they tend to be more "gutsy person gets in way too deep over his head, and through a combination of skill, luck, and sheer chutzpa manages to take many opponents out, complete his job, and survive to escape".

I'll second the recomendation for Howard's Conan and add a couple of new ones.
First, Kane by Karl Wagner. An immortal fighter/wizard with plans for creating his own kingdoms. Various stories include; demons, warriors, magic users, werewolves, aliens, and hordes of everyday adventures that Kane cuts down with ease.
Second, John Carter of Mars. Created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, this character finds himself on the planet Barsoom (Mars). A world inhabited by giant four-armed green warriors, 15' tall killer alien gorillas, a noble race of red martians, and all the barbaric splendor that any red-blooded fighting man could ever hope for.

There's an excerpt from "The Dark Muse," a Kane story, at Black Gate.

If you want sheer badass attitude, consider Vampire$ by John Steakley. Modern day vampire hunters whose methods include high explosives and ballista bolts attached to truck winches.

J

John Steakley's stuff is cool! I would also recommend his other book, Armor, a sci-fi Starhip Troopers-ish story that also stars the two main characters from his Vampire$ book.

Manly men! Doing manly things!
Like killing vampires or hordes of evil aliens!
