Half-Daelkyr with tentacle whip, fighter 1 battle sorc 7 knight phantom 4,

Half-Daelkyr? You must be mad! ;)

(I can't help asking myself how a half-daelkyr gets himself inducted into the knight phantoms though... and if the race has a level adjustment that is normally a *very* bad thing for caster classes)

By choosing ranger as your fighter type class, you forgoe heavy armor proficiency and don't qualify for spellsword. You also gain no fighting ability beyond +1 BAB and martial weapons as a first level ranger. (And, by level 17, having 4 ranks of listen isn't much more impressive than having none).

A PC in a campaign I play in has a Rgr2/Wiz7 and it is his most successful PC ever - the extra hps at low level are good, the two weapon fighting has come in several times, but the big benefit he gets is from the skills. While you are right that 4 ranks of listen at level 17 isn't much cop, the main point is that even cross-class the skill cap on all those nice ranger skills is level+3 rather than half that... and a wizard has plenty of skill points, so his spot skill is still up there at +12 ranks (+familiar bonus etc)

Cheers

Key spells:
Level 1: critical strike
Level 2: Whirling blade, wraithstrike, bladeweave (at low levels), swift fly
Level 5: IMPROVED BLINK , freezing fog,
Level 6: Fires of purity, brilliant blade
Level 7: Limited wish (think Stalwart Pact)

I don't recognise those spells from your list - where are they from and what do they basically do?

Cheers

Most are from the Complete books, esp. Complete Adventurer.

Here are some of them...

Critical Strike gives a weapon bonuses on critical/damage for one attack (swift spell).
Wraithstrike turns all melee attacks into touch attacks for one round (swift spell). Nasty!
Bladeweave adds an extra melee touch attack, which has a save-or-be-dazed kind of effect instead of doing damage (swift, too, I think).
Swift Fly is like Fly just a swift action and only 1 round duration.
Improved Blink is actually called Greater Blink now and is like Blink just with full control, so you have no miss chance and can move through objects and so on. Impressive spell!
Limited Wish ... oh, you meant the Stalwart Pact, that's some spell from Complete Divine, which is pretty much a contingent spell, that gives nice bonuses when something happens (usually when your hps drop to a certain threshold).

Splendid, thanks Thanee.

(I didn't get any of the 'complete' books, but I'm... surprised? to find so many spells in complete adventurer of all places!)

Cheers

A Battle Sorceror/Havoc mage could be nasty. I can't believe no one's mentioned the Havoc Mage PRC. It's 5 levels (+2 full casting levels) and lets you cast standard casting action spells of 8th level or less with your Full Attack action.

FTR 1/WIZ 5/ELK 9/HVK 5
By 20th level, you're only casting 8th level spells, so maybe that hurts, but your BAB is +15.

It's not so surprising, really.

Complete Adventurer could be nicknamed the Complete Book of Multiclassing, since it has so many feats, prestige classes and spells, which are specifically designed to help out multiclass characters. Hence the many swift spells in the very low spell levels, to give multiclass wizards some decent spells to enhance their other class abilities (i.e. fighting for fighter/wizards).
