So do people want to start placing bets on when 4th ed is going to come out? I've seen many point at this Gen Con as the announcement time and 2008 as the date in question.

They would not announce it two years in advance. That would murder their 2007 sales for no good reason. You're more likely to see a 2007 GenCon "Big Announcement" for a 2008 release. My related prediction is that they'll do a new edition of the Star Wars RPG to take advantage of the tv show, help push the minis, and plug the sales gap as 3.5 becomes a lame duck. So you'd see a Star Wars push in 2007 and the first half of 2008 and then the big launch of 4E at GenCon 2008. And let me be very clear I'm simply speculating here. I haven't heard anything and have no insider info. Your guess on this stuff is as good mine.

Or sometime. Really, I've joined the crowd saying "I'm happy with what I've got, let 'em do whatever they want with it, whenever they get around to it." To get me to jump to 4E, they'll really have to make it a significant improvement -- without invalidating all my work and tools for 3E at the same time.

I don't feel good about betting on when I would become the "break away splinter group that fragments the financial viablity of the D&D franchise".

Even though I play/run C&C I still buy some WOTC product. If/when they go to 4th edition I won't buy anything anymore. Except people selling off their useless 3.5 stuff on eBay, I'll help bid up some of that stuff.
