Beyond High Fantasy

It might be a matter of perception, yes. I can see where FR might have drawn inspiration from Westerns, but I'd hardly classify it as a 'fantasy western' - FR draws a lot of influence from other sources (most notably Middle Earth) as well, and really doesn't focus on any elements specific to the American Old West. I mean, FR is about as much 'Old West' as Greyhawk is 'Arthurian Britain' (both games borrow bits and pieces from said sources, but neither of them comes close to re-creating them).
Okay, we don't have to discuss this till the bitter end, because the FR are obviously quite far away from the result that your original question was aiming for. I just wanted to give it as an example for a "fantasy western", with the Middle Earth influences (that's probably mostly confined to the races) and others forming the "fantasy" part and most setting elements and much of the atmosphere forming the "western" part. But I see that you want a bit more western in your fantasy than that ;).

I guess I should have been more clear about that in my initial post. I was talking, not about fantasy settings inspired by other genres, but about fantasy settings that actually focus on showcasing tropes of those other genres (e.g., in the case of Westerns, gun/spell fighters, a totally lawless frontier, PC races being the minority in that frontier region, etc).

Fantasy Western: Deadlands. More specifically Fantasy Western Horror Post Apocolypse.

Fantasy Noir: Bloodshadows. There's supposed to be a new version coming out from the new West End Games using the D6 system.

I actually wrote one recently. There's a lot of polishing still to be done, but it's complete as a playtest version.

The magic system's unique, I believe. At least, no-one's mentioned a game that did magic this way before. I used the 30 years war as a model to try and blend dystopian dark age (ala Warhammer, Black Company) with Westerns and Cthulhu without making it FEEL like a fusion of genres.

I believe that it is already available as a PDF at RPGNow, but in fairness, Bloodshadows has more in common with Cyberpunk (which itself borrows from Noir) than pure Noir itself. It's still a pretty neat setting, though - just not quie what I had in mind. Also, when I said 'fantasy' I meant fantasy as a genre, not fantasy as an all inclusive sub-heading for anything imaginary.

Very cool!

I concur with "Cast a Deadly Spell." If you want to put a D&D spin on it, adding some non-human races would be pretty neat. "Sin City" also comes close to fantasy in some cases.

My download gets stuck at 81%, won't proceed any further. I suspect a problem with your host. It is said you get what you pay for. With free webspace providers you don't even get that.

Update: Opened the file in Netscape (Reader plugin) and got 34 blank pages.

I suppose the problem is on your side. The file opens fine in my browser :).

Nice concept, btw. :)
