Beyond High Fantasy

My download gets stuck at 81%, won't proceed any further. I suspect a problem with your host. It is said you get what you pay for. With free webspace providers you don't even get that.

Update: Opened the file in Netscape (Reader plugin) and got 34 blank pages.

The problem is likely on your end, as it downloaded fine here, too (I use Opera 8 and Acrobat Reader).

No, it was Tripod. I happened to catch Tripod when Tripod's servers were having a flakeout. My last attempt to download the file actually succeeded. Mythmere, find a pay host. Most are cheap (some $5.00 or less) and do better work than Tripod or GeoCities.

Assessment: Loads of whitespace. Don't be afraid to expand the margins and use columns. The art is good amateur art. Needs work to pass for professional, I urge the artist to work on it. I would include his work in A Little Dice Music if he offered.

Heh. :) The artist is me, too, so that's a big compliment. I figured that even crappy art was better than none for presenting a whole game to a reader who's never seen it before.

I will be formatting it much better fairly soon, too. I know a few people who do excellent layout work, but I've got to get some details a bit more fleshed out, and see some more people playtest it cold before I give it to someone who'll spend time on the document. I want to have the GNU-license better worded before it gets really distributed.

BTW, I've just set up a discussion group for the further development of the game. If anyone's interested in making suggestions for tweaks, doing some online gaming using the system, or the like, please feel free to go and join up.

Sure, I think that there are some settings that could be used for fantasy noir, but I really haven't seen any that cover such ground by design. That's what I'm fiddling with - fantasy class analogues to classic noir archetypes such as 'gang boss' and 'private eye', as well as a focus on corruption in government (from the local constabulary to public officials). Also, rules that support genre tropes (such as 'if you draw a weapon, you will be attacked' and the like).
As Tetsujin said, Eberron, especially Sharn, supports noir and has been designed with noir in mind. For example, Eberron Campaign Setting has the Master Inquisitive prestige class ('private eye'), and Sharn is all about corruption and other noir stuff.

Eberron is not singularly about noir, though.

Another good source for that fantasy/western feel is the Savage Coast/Savage Baronies area from Mystara. Also kind of has the 'Zorro' vibe as well. A good setting, could provide loads of inspiration and elements to yoink for your own campaign.

tetsujin28, I agree 100%. Eberron seems almost tailor-made for the noir (Master Inquisitive) and espionage (King's Citadel) type of games. With a little work, it might even work for a fantasy/western campaign (Cannith Wand Adept = Gunslinger?)
