Big movies then, inappropriate now? Vice versa too?

Indeed. If I recall correctly, it's just about the only Disney movie that's never been released on video or DVD, at least in the United States anyway (I know for a fact that it's been released in Japan and some other asian countries).
Indeed. We have a copy of the Japanese release. It has the original soundtrack and is all in English, but during the songs there are Japanese subtitles on the bottom.

As to the drinking in films - tv was just as bad, in fact some 1960's sitcoms were chock full of drinking. Watch an old episode of "Bewitched" sometime on TVLand and you'll be amazed at how much alcohol flows in each half hour episode.

Sure it would. Look at the SCARY MOVIES line of movies. They are far more offensive and have far less meaning or commentary.

Just take his (and my) word for it...don't watch them to find out.

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T WATCH THEM!!!!

You'll thank us later.

After re-watching Fight Club for the umpteenth time a couple of weeks ago with my girlfriend, she remarked "They'd never be able to make this movie now." I think 9/11 really took the edge off of some movies.

Yeah, I've commented on this recently too.

I think there are a lot of older movies that just simply couldn't get made due to thier treatment of women and minorities.

What popular movies from previous decades could not be released to theater audiences today?
True Lies. An Arabian terrorist plot to nuke an American city played as a romantic comedy? Yeah I don't think that'd go over too well today....

I'd say it's more of an action/comedy than a romantic comedy, but I agree that movies about arab terrorists are considered insensitive in today's day and age. In the Tom Clancy novel The Sum of All Fears, arab terrorists detonated a nuclear weapon on American soil. In the movie adaptation that came out a couple of years ago, the terrorists were changed from arab fundamentalists to rich, European neo-Nazis.

Other movies that would have trouble being released today would be many of the James Bond movies from the 1960s and early 1970s, because they'd be considered sexist and misogynic.

Yeah I know but thats how James Cameron described it when giving the reason he tossed his ideas for True Lies 2 out the window, and I think it just sounds funnier described that way. :)

And when'd you change your avatar? I didn't even realize it was you at first seeing that happy go lucky Gipper pic in place of your usual barbarian alter ego....

Ah, I was never aware of James Cameron describing True Lies as a romantic comedy. That is rather amusing. Too bad it's unlikely we'll ever see a True Lies 2; I thought that the original True Lies was easily Arnold's best movie of the 1990s right behind Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

Oh, and I've been using this Ronald Reagan avatar ever since his death on Saturday, and I'm going to keep using it until this weekend as a tribute. Heh, I know how it can be a little disorienting when a poster changes their avatar after a long time of using a single picture. :)

Dumbo? Not on the big screen. Look at that song by the crows, and their mannerisms. Fairly racist portrayal.

Warner Bros. Bugs bunny et al. cartoons are edited for violence, but some of them were also really racist. Like bugs bunny outsmarting the black boy (using gambling as a hook!) and some WWII propoganda. Doubt we'd see that as a cartoon movie trailer now.

Bound would not likely have been shown in earlier times, nor much about male gay behavior.

Oh, and for the record ... I totally agree with Tracerbullet.

And you can quote me on that.

That hasn't changed too much really. I mean if you ever watched an episode of Frasier, I don't think there was a time that Niles came over that they didn't drink Sherry. And most of the cop shows now days have someone who either has a drinking problem or is getting over one.
