Blackrat's return to miniature painting/modifying

Blackrat

He Who Lurks Beyond The Veil
So I recently moved to a new apartment and during the move I found a treasure. At the back of my junk-closet was laying my HeroQuest (Everyone remembers that right? The boardgame from '89). When I was a kid I used my brother's car-model paints to paint the miniatures (with a talent of less than a ten-year old :heh: ). Except for the chaos-warriors (which I repainted a few years ago) all the minis still have the same paint-job I gave them as a kid. Now it has been almost two years since I did any painting and when I found the game I decided it might be a good idea to brush my skills. So I picked one of the orcs and gave him a new paint. Here is a couple of pictures of the orc with a new paint (for comparison standing next to an orc with paintjob from the 90's. You can tell it's from the 90's from his trance neon-green shirt :D ).

Looks like you have improved a lot in the years since you last painted mini's.

I just wish I had half the skills of some of you guys on this board. My big ol' hands really cannot do any really fine detail work, but I can do stuff like priming and basic painting, but I can do nothing like you.

Keep it up you have great painting skills.

Just my 1/4 pound.

Well now. Been painting those HQ minis and doing good. But now for my return to miniatures modifying. One of those HQ orcs had lost his sword during the years (not to mention all the goblins having lost their weapons but that's a story for another day). Anyway, I decided to give the orc a new weapon. That being a spear from WH skaven warrior box. It looks quite nice. Seems my touch haven't gone out. And when I can take a picture later today I'll show you.

Edit: And here be the orc

Pity about the unarmed goblins. The one with the gigantic orc-sized scimitar was always my favorite. But, I digress.

Looking pretty good, but I'm fairly sure that the HeroQuest minis were never designed for good painting. It looks as if they still have a little flashing, and those little plastic mold lines that you might want to try sanding off before painting. Or not, it might be a lot less noticeable when looking at the actual mini as opposed to a hi-res closeup.

Oh, and please note: I could never even master watercolors as a child, so take any criticism as coming from a guy who could never even attempt anything as good as you have done. :)

That was a great game - my middle son and I still play it today in fact (using my old set)... :) And yes, we paint some of the minis. I will have to see if I can round up some pics and post them... :D

I have a really cool mimr that I painted blue and red; and a pretty cool skeleton as well!
