Blindsight and Deeper Darkness

Ah, the old darkness trick. Its major problem is that its boundaries are clearly visible to people outside. If one enemy spellcaster moves outside the effect-- or is further than 60' from you to start with-- he can easily drop area-effect spells at the center of the darkball. Since it's centered on an object you carry, you'll be attempting a lot of Reflex saves.

You could drop the centering object and move 15' away from it (to be outside a Fireball's spread, for instance). However, that makes the darkness immobile, and you lose your advantage if your opponents move outside it.

Ah, this shouldn't be a problem. The idea is to already have the blindsight on (it lasts hours) then move into battle. As a free action, I can draw the stone (or whatever) after we've engaged the enemy.

My PC is the one that goes for the big guy in back by jumping over or moving through the front line (Boots of Striding and Springing and Ring of Jump) to take out the mage. If the Mage does get off an area affect, we only do this while engaging the enemy, he'll kill his own guys. I've got 84 hps and good saves. I'm not worried.

The tactic is primarily for me, the other guys just have Blindsight for if they get caught in my area. I chase down the magic users, they can't target anything and I kill them with a Slay Living, Death Touch, Heavy Flail, whatever it takes.

Our party is very strong and could do just as well in the light. It is a tournament though and role playing, inventiveness and surviving are very important to winning ;)

By 9th level, most mages hang out far above melee. An item that grants flight would probably serve you better than the boots/ring combo.

Great Idea! Winged Boots though, cost 12000gp. I only get 36000. Poop. And potions of Fly aren't super cheap. Probably just get our Wizard to cast it on me until I can scrounge up 12000gp. You are right though. Good idea.

We are playing Forgotten realms (no builder books so "Feathered" is out, or I would buy that), is there any other item in there that will let me fly for cheap? I'm at work right now, or I would look it up myself.

Thanks,

Flying still won't help them much...

Inkblotter: This wicked +2 unholy longbow is enchanted with the power of darkness. As a standard action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity, the wielder may enchant an arrow with lesser deeper darkness. The arrow then transfers the spell upon successfully striking a target. This power must be activated before the attack roll. The lesser deeper darkness spell will not affect creatures struck, though it can bestow the spell upon any object struck. However, it is important to note that magic items may save against this effect.
Caster Level: 12th; Prerequisites: Craft Magic Arms and Armor, lesser deeper darkness, unholy blight, creator must be evil; Market Price: 34,875 gp.

...hehehe :D

Well, K, seeing as I am a Cleric of a LAWFUL GOOD God, I don't have much of a shot at that one ;)

What is Lesser Deeper Darkness? Isn't that just Darkness? :D

Broom of flying. DMG 15100 gp.
Hrm, this is more expensive than the boots. Not something I was thinking of!

I would take the Feathered Enchantment out of DotF (Flying for only 8000gp), but no builder books.

I have many Searing Lights prepared, GMWs and a crossbow. I'm not worried about their mage when we have our own!

I'll eventually find some winged boots. Till then, I'm sure we can handle the flying Mage just fine.

Well, your alignment isn't really my problem, now is it? ;)

No. I got a request a while back to create a bow with a custom effect, a weaker version of Deeper Darkness but stronger than Darkness. I created the custom spell and then created the bow.

Just one thing. A friend who tried the good old darkness trick himself (though with blindfight, not blindsight) was wasted by a summoner who called some devils.... or demons?
