Probably next year, though you might see some on the clearance rack before then.

At least they're encoded on the same physical disk format. I remembered during the VHS/Beta war, you cannot fit a VHS cassette into Betamax player.

Well, you could fit the discs into the other player (and a CD or DVD or a Dreamcast GD); they're pretty close to the same size. But they're not the same media, and you need a different laser to read off of them.

BTW, do the patents also covers the codecs of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?

Different patents cover the codecs; both types of media support the same codecs, actually. Heck, they support the old DVD movie codec, too.

I have no plans to buy one in the immeditate future. I may wait out the whole format war as well. Personally, I'm rooting for HD-DVD because Sony is backing Blu-Ray.

Blu-ray will become the next Betamax - how Sony doesn't learn.
